Classic Blues and Boogie Woogie by Champion Jack Dupree, the great Blues master from New Orleans. Jack is featured as a singer here with Axel Zwingenberger (p) and acoustic accompaniment from the Mojo Blues Band.
Songs reveal an artfully considered blending of classic American and English roots and rock influences, from the Beatles and Badfinger to Roy Orbison, James Brown, Alan Toussaint and Elvis Presley
In the mid-1990s, after a several-year hiatus, Isaac Hayes made a comeback with two albums released simultaneously: BRANDED was a set of new material, while RAW & REFINED collected instrumentals from over the years. The origins of the tracks remain murky; the album's title implies that old, unearthed demos from Hayes's prime period have been packaged with newer recordings, most likely from the same sessions as BRANDED. The sound is mostly vintage Hayes–funky, organ-heavy jams replete with histrionic orchestration and wah-wah guitars. One cannot help but conjure images of SHAFT as saxophone solos rip over '70s-era funk beats. For those completists seeking a Hayes fix, RAW & REFINED more than satisfies over the course of its 13 funky and pretty tracks.
' Another excellent JB's album; this time, they get a little less jazzy and a little more soulful. Also, they add narration and lyrics to a bunch of the songs, and it works extremely well. The album works well as a conceptual whole, and doesn't have that patched-together feel that many James Brown-related works do. Friendly Fred Wesley's narration between songs definitely helps this along. The album's theme is getting your fill, both literally in terms of eating, and in getting satisfaction from life. Fred talks about being back home with the folks, gettin' down, being hungry, and he thanks DJ's, fans and JB himself for the opportunity to play. The result is a very up-feeling record that still gets down and dirty with nasty guitar work, rock-solid basslines, and frantic horn playing.' Rob Clough at duke.edu
Back in the mid-80s, when folk music was in the doldrums, a New York-based acoustic guitarist and singer-songwriter was hailed as the scene's new saviour, thanks to her cool, classy songs and often highly personal lyrics. Whether "folk" was the right description for Suzanne Vega is of course debatable, for there were few traditional influences in much of her work, but she deservedly sold millions of albums and notched up hits with Luka and Tom's Diner..
Schornsheim’s talents are hardly challenged by this music; her playing exhibits sparkling virtuosity and an exceptional sense of line. The outer movements exude typical Haydnesque vigor and the slow movements are appropriately lyrical, with nicely shaped melodic lines as well as fluent but never tedious ornamentation. Energetic, vibrant, and colorful, these comfortably paced performances are supported with sympathetic and precise, but never antiseptic playing from Neue Düsseldorfer Hofmusik, their biting brass and potent timpani adding much ceremonial pomp to Hob XVIII:1 and 8.
Endresen's vocals sound unnervingly close to those of folk-rock singer Sandy Denny on this song cycle of sorts, originally commissioned by a Norwegian jazz festival. Themes of traveling and a vaguely mythic air (the songs were originally titled "Pagan Pilgrimage") predominate, but the chief pleasures are the haunting and resonant qualities of Endresen's voice.
