Humberto Teixeira – “O Doutor do Baião” ("The Doctor of Baião") finally receives tribute to his legacy. In launching the Biscoito Fino, Maria Bethânia, Caetano Veloso, Chico Buarque, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Sivuca, Lenine, Fagner, Zeca Pagodinho, Elba Ramalho, Sivuca, Rita Ribeiro, dancing and the Group Cordel do Fogo Encantado recreate, under the Regency of maestro Wagner Tiso, the work of genial Humberto Teixeira on disk doctor Baião.
Beautiful spiritual post-Coltrane jazz, played by an excellent but oft-overlooked duo from the early 70s! The Grubbs brothers are fantastic reed players, with a soaring sense of soulfulness that keeps things lively throughout – a style that inflects their horns together nicely to shade in colors on the tunes, then breaks them apart for expressive and meaningful solos that are filled with a tremendous amount of soul! Earl plays tenor and soprano, Carl plays alto sax – and other players include Stanley Clarke on bass, Sid Simmons on piano, and John Goldsmith on drums and percussion – all hitting a vibe that's totally great throughout!
' The Killer Meters finally drop their first full album of their own material. Fans who have seen them play live since their debut album "A Tribute To The Meters" will be waiting for this. Now they have it! Throughout the album, the formidable Karime Kendra's amazing vocals take the album into classic soul territory. Her voice is reminiscent of her mother, Ty Karim, and she really knows how to take it to the limit these days. The rock influence is prevalent throughout. The guitar of Nick Hirsch, gets into its fuzz every now and again , but he also knows when to let the funk flow. The drums of Virgil Howe, snap hard throughout the album and the break fiends out there will be kept happy with a sprinkling of drum breaks.
Very few soul bands today can master a genre and then expand into other territories whilst remaining true to their roots. The Killer Meters can and they have. Break Out with them to this soul/funk/rock/psych goodness! ' AMG
