Oscar Peterson Plays the Jerome Kern Songbook is a 1959 album by Oscar Peterson, of compositions by Jerome Kern.
Oscar Emmanuel Peterson, CC, CQ, OOnt, (August 15, 1925 – December 23, 2007) was a Canadian jazz pianist and composer. He was called the "Maharaja of the keyboard" by Duke Ellington, "O.P." by his friends, and was a member of jazz royalty. He released over 200 recordings, won seven Grammy Awards, and received other numerous awards and honours over the course of his career.

The first album as a leader from trumpeter Frank Gordon – one of the lesser-remembered members of the AACM in the 70s, and an artist who's probably best known for his work in the soulful combo The Awakening! This set has Gordon blowing in some richly creative territory, especially for the 80s – a soulful, stretched-out sort of groove that's mostly built around original compositions by Frank – well-written numbers with a strong undercurrent of darkness, even at moments of brighter light from some of the soloists – who include Bobby Watson on alto sax, Ari Brown on tenor, and James Williams on piano. There's a rock-solid rhythm section on the date – courtesy of Rufus Reid on bass and Carl Allen on drums – which offsets some of the more exploratory horn passages nicely – and titles include "El Toro", "Clarion Echoes", "Convulsion", "Illusion", "Libra", and "Take Off".

Based in Haugesund, on the rugged west coast of Norway - near Bergen and Stavanger, Christina Bjordal has established a fine name for herself in the Norwegian vocal pop/jazz genre. Her debut album"Where Dreams Begin", with Christina Bjordal Band, was released in 2003. It was granted great reviews. Two years later Christina signed an exclusive contract with Universal Music, which resulted in her new solo album "Brighter Days".

Eric Kloss was 16 and 17 when he recorded his first two albums, which are reissued in full on this single CD. A brilliant altoist and tenor saxophonist with a sound and a post-bop style of his own, Kloss shows a great deal of potential during these performances, which were originally released as Introducing Eric Kloss and Love and All That Jazz. He is joined by trios that feature either Don Patterson or Richard "Groove" Holmes on organ; Pat Martino, Vinnie Corrao, or Gene Edwards on guitar; and Billy James or Grady Tate on drums. Two Kloss originals and one by Patterson join ten jazz standards, including "Close Your Eyes," "All Blues," a cooking version of "Embraceable You," and Miles Davis' "No Blues." The fire, intensity, and creativity of Eric Kloss' playing makes one regret that he did not have a much longer career.

Leonard William Hambro (1923–1995) was a journeyman jazz musician who played woodwinds (primarily alto saxophone) with a host of bands, orchestras, and jazz notables from the early 1940s through the mid-1960s, and continued as a session musician, music producer, booking agent, and entertainment coordinator through the mid-1990s. Early in his professional career, Hambro spelled his name "Lennie" but changed it to the former spelling in 1954 (although he was occasionally referred to as "Lennie" in the press as late as 1957).

EMI Classics presents the world premiere release of three of Thomas Adès' new works recorded live, partly conducted by the composer himself, and, in the case of Tevot, by Sir Simon Rattle with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Calling the gathering for this CD a "summit" might be overstating the case a bit. The Los Angeles-based quartet (tenor saxophonist Ralph Moore, pianist Eric Reed, bassist Bob Hurst and drummer Jeff Hamilton) may not all play together on a regular basis, but their paths have crossed many times. For this set, they perform ten veteran standards, including "Pick Yourself Up," "Old Folks," "Golden Earrings," "Caravan" and "Tequila." Moore and Reed take many fine solos, and the music, although not containing any real surprises, is satisfying and swinging.
