With IN A SILENT WAY, the elements of popular music, blues and electronics that had been implicit in Miles Davis' previous recordings now came center stage, and the trumpeter never looked back again. IN A SILENT WAY is Miles' BIRTH OF THE COOL/MILES AHEAD/KIND OF BLUE for the rock generation.
Gone are the rhythmic and harmonic trappings of bebop. In their place, Miles conjures a hypnotic, subliminal dance pulse and an airy, celestial drone of electric keyboards. Miles fell in love with the bell tones and flute-like textures of Fender/Rhodes electric pianos, and in the hands of Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea and Joe Zawinul (who doubles on organ), they create layer upon layer of choral texture, in great reverberant washes of color and counterpoint.

Lyrical sensitivity, ironic exposé, ardent commitment and bitter sarcasm: these are motivation axioms which the Dresden composer Wilfried Krätzschmar discovered for his artistic work. Raised in a no-man's-land between nonconformist parents and doctrinaire teachers, he confronted the prevailing political and artistic pressures of the time with a creative urge of unflinching openness, uniting a fascinating and purposefully cultivated timbral imagination with a sharpness of metaphor that all-too often provoked extremely divergent reactions from his listeners. Krätzschmar's second symphony "Explosionen und Cantus" brought him at a stroke into the glare of widespread publicity. It was applauded by listeners and critics alike for its surprisingly accessible and yet emotionally rending synthesis of the familiar and the new.

Procol Harum is the self-titled first album by British rock band Procol Harum, released in June 1967. The original Deram release of the LP included a large poster of the album cover artwork by Dickinson. Though the album was recorded on multi-track, it was issued in mono-only in the UK, and in mono and rechanneled stereo in the US. Despite extensive searching, the original multi-track tapes have not been located and thus a stereo mix of the original 10 tracks may never be possible. Several alternate takes (marked + in the list, below), however, have been mixed into stereo and are available on CD. Hummel was employed at the Esterházy court and later became music director in Weimar. During his lifetime his many piano compositions and chamber works attracted special attention. The oratorio Der Durchzug durchs rote Meer (The Passage Through the Red Sea) at first went unnoticed and continued to be labelled as “no longer extant” even last year in the new article in MGG, though the autograph has been in the holdings of the British Library in London for more than a hundred years.

Even though the '90s are considered by many longtime Yngwie Malmsteen fans as not necessarily his musical or creative peak (the '80s are usually given the nod), you have to give credit to the Swedish guitar shredder for sticking to his guns throughout the '90s. When just about every veteran rocker was trying to fit in with the musical climate (whether it be donning flannel during the grunge years or donning baggy jeans during the rap-metal years), Malmsteen paid no mind – continuing merrily on his classic metal path. Since his albums were uneven during this period, the 14-track Best of Yngwie Malmsteen: 1990-1999 will come in handy to casual admirers, who aren't going to track down Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra in E Flat Minor Op. 1 anytime soon…
