Steve Khan gained his initial reputation as a fusion guitarist, so this session was a revelation to many when it was released. A rather introspective set of melodic music, the program is highlighted by an 18-and-a-half-minute, nine-song Thelonious Monk medley that is performed solo. Khan is actually the only performer throughout the date, although he uses overdubbing on some cuts ("In a Silent Way" has eight guitars).

Daniel Balavoine (5 February 1952 – 14 January 1986) was a French singer and songwriter. He was hugely popular in the French-speaking world, and inspired many singers in the 1980s, such as Jean-Jacques Goldman, and Michel Berger, his closest friend. He took part in French political life, and is known for a 1980 televised verbal confrontation with François Mitterrand. In the French music-business, Balavoine earned his own spot with both his acute and powerful voice and his lyrics, full of sadness and revolt. He was emphatic, his songs are for a most valuable part talking about despair, pain, death. Hope was under unclaimed, still present anyway….

It is hard to believe that it has been 30 years since Whitney Houston had been discovered by music mogul Clive Davis, singing in a New York club called Sweetwater, singing backup for her mom, Gospel great Cissy Houston, and since then, she had really catapaulted her way to the top of the charts. Not only breaking records, by being the first female singer to debut at #1 on Billboard, to being listed in The Guiness Book Of World Records in 2006 as the most-awarded female singer of all-time with an astonishing 415 awards worldwide, including being named most influential diva of the past 25 years according to the website idolator, and having the highest-selling soundtrack of all time with 1992's The Bodyguard.

After “Looking for America”, an album for big band that had taken three years to write, I had to look for a new project. It was time to do something with a small group. Playing duets with Steve Swallow was too hard, and Steve and I had already toured and recorded as a trio with Andy Sheppard. The next size up was a quartet. The obvious move was to
add Billy Drummond, who had already played drums with 4 x 4 and the big band, to the trio.

When my agent in Europe asked me what the group would be called, the answer came to me instantly: The Lost Chords.
