Jutta Hipp was often compared with male pianists like Lennie Tristano and Horace Silver. Sometimes those references were pejorative, as if she possessed no worthwhile original sensibilities. Perhaps the best recommendation came from Charles Mingus, who befriended the German-born painter/pianist and held her in the highest esteem. Heard in the company of Zoot Sims, Hipp sounds at times somewhat similar to Mingus when he chose to express himself at the piano. But that again is a comparison with a male musician! ~ AllMusic

Unjustly ignored at the time of its release, Fred Jackson's lone album, Hootin' 'N Tootin', is a thoroughly enjoyable set of funky soul-jazz with hard bop overtones. It is true that Jackson doesn't try anything new on the set, but he proves to be a capable leader, coaxing hot, infectious performances out of guitarist Willie Jones, organist Earl Vandyke and drummer Wilbert Hogan, all of whom were collegues of Jackson in the Lloyd Price band. ~ AllMusic

Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California). Though Coltrane was already a veteran of two years with the Miles Davis Quintet and several all-star saxophone sessions for Prestige, it was his 1957 date DAKAR that found the tenor saxophonist beginning to stretch out in earnest as a leader. While his boppish Blue Note solo date BLUE TRAIN showed Trane extending on his mainstream mastery, DAKAR found this adventurous musician exploring some of the exotic sounds and inspirations which would mark his future growth.
