The "5" Royales were a relatively unheralded, but significant, link between early R&B and early soul in their combination of doo wop, jump blues, and gospel styles. Their commercial success was relatively modest – they had seven Top Ten R&B hits in the 1950s, most recorded in the span of little over a year between late 1952 and late 1953. A few of their singles would prove extremely popular in cover versions by other artists, though – James Brown and Aretha Franklin tore it up with "Think," Ray Charles covered "Tell the Truth," and the Shirelles (and later the Mamas & the Papas) had pop success with "Dedicated to the One I Love." .

With his unique and recognizable style, pianist Matthew Shipp worked and recorded vigorously during the 1990s, creating music in which free jazz and modern classical intertwine. He first became known in the early '90s as the pianist in the David S. Ware Quartet, and soon began leading his own dates - most often including Ware bandmate, leading bassist William Parker - and recording a number of duets with a variety of musicians, from the legendary Roscoe Mitchell to violinist Mat Maneri, who began appearing on recordings in the 1990s.

Moments of Genesis are as spooky and arty as those on Abacab – in particular, there's the tortured howl of "Mama," uncannily reminiscent of Phil Collins' Face Value, and the two-part "Second Home by the Sea" – but this eponymous 1983 album is indeed a rebirth, as so many self-titled albums delivered in the thick of a band's career often are…

"Missa Criola" is a unique work of the Argentinian composer Ariel Ramirez at 1964, that includes 5 religious hymns viewed under the prism of the rhythms and the traditional instruments of his country. The amazing beauty of the music inspired Stavros Xarhakos who arranged and directed an historical performance of Missa Criola in the Metropolitan Catholic Church of St Dionysios in Athens, the 11th April 1989. Xarhakos invited Giorgos Dalaras to interpret the vocal parts. The musical ensemble complete two more singers, a chorus and an orchestra with traditional and conventional instruments. Enjoy a wonderful album.

Too many rockers have made the mistake of never providing an official live album, but thankfully, Y&T isn't one of them. Recorded at the San Jose Cabaret in San Jose, CA on December 28 and 31, 1990, this CD paints a most impressive picture of the Deep Purple-influenced heavy metal/hard-rock band.

Though it may not seem like much time, the five short years during which they recorded for A&M Records marked the most consistent period of Y&T's unfortunate career. And though they would sign a new contract with Geffen thereafter, their subsequent, glam-drenched efforts would prove even less inspired.

"Five Miles out" represents the typical format of Mike's albums in the 80's: long track, here "Taurus 2", and an assortment of shorter musical pieces. (Mike has started this concept with "Platinum" and has kept it for almost twelve years.) Being a strongly conceptual album, "Five Miles out" was inspired with Mike's adventure, when a plane, piloted by him, was caught in a heavy storm. Needles to say, this album wouldn't gain its high reputation (it was his most selling album after the debut "Tubular Bells") without act of Mike's new discovery which he found in Maggie Reilly, female singer.

This essential Doors release compiles three films - Live at the Hollywood Bowl, Dance on Fire and The Soft Parade - A Retrospective. The first is a collection of 14 songs - including some extremely rare footage - drawn from the group's many television performances. The second, filmed live at the Hollywood Bowl in the summer of 1968, features Jim Morrison and the band performing an extended version of "Light My Fire," plus 10 of their other most loved songs. And the third includes the Doors' last televised appearance on PBS in 1969 in the aftermath of the infamous Miami concert that resulted in Morrison's arrest for "indecent exposure".

The ever-evolving groups led by Israeli-born, NYC-based bassist Omer Avital are entwined with the institution that is Smalls. A member of the now-legendary Jason Lindner Big Band, its seven-year Smalls residency serving as a hotbed for a host of up-and-coming musicians, Avital co-led the Smalls jam session for a time, in addition to his own ensembles. This live album captures his longstanding collaboration with Lindner, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, saxophonist Joel Frahm and drummer Johnathan Blake. This live recording captures the quintet’s remarkable synergy and palpable energy, the unique Smalls ambience, and the audience’s enthusiastic response to the stellar musicianship soaring throughout.
