    The multi awarded soundtrack composer Zbigniew Preisner, after the "Requiem for my Friend" dedicated to the memory of his friend Kieslowski, he started "Silence, Night and Dreams", a project that gave him the freedom to create without having to follow a specific screenplay. It is a work for soloists, choir and orchestra with leading vocalist the sublime Teresa Salgueiro from Madredeus. Preisner uses texts from The Book of Job and the Gospel of St. Matthew and the orchestration has elements of both classical and contemporary electronic music. The work is in nine movements, with the texts sung in English and in Latin. Just note the titles of the sections and let Preisner’s spiritual and atmospheric music wash over you. Full scans included.

    Swedish saxophonist Bernt Rosengren had already made his mark in various small group settings by the time he turned his attention to building a big band in the mid '70s. His tenor had captured the attention of many an ear in director Roman Polanski's Knife In The Water (Zespol, 1962), and his work with trumpeter Thad Jones, pianist George Russell, and trumpeter Don Cherry gave him a certain cachet within the European and American jazz scenes, but Rosengren's restless spirit kept him on the go, in musical terms. He'd already had his way with bop, post-bop, jazz-meets-Middle East hybrids and various experimental offshoots, so he turned his attention to the big band format when a thirst for something different overtook him again.

    Mobile Fidelity reissued two of Aretha Franklin's best albums, Aretha Now and Lady Soul, on one gold CD. Although these are two classic records, only hardcore Aretha fans will need to acquire this disc, since the disc carries such a high retail price. Granted, Mobile Fidelity's remastering is very good, but the remastering on the individual CD reissues nearly matches it, and those are available for considerably less money. Audiophiles will prefer this version, and they'll gladly play the steep ticket price, but most fans will be satisfied with either the remastered CD versions of the individual albums or the box set. ~allmusic

    Czesław Niemen (1939 – 2004), real name Czesław Juliusz Wydrzycki, was one of the most important and original Polish singer-songwriters and rock balladeers of the last quarter-century, singing mainly in Polish.
    This fantastic retrospective (Part One of the series)- released in 2002 by Polskie Radio SA (PRCD 331-336) consists of first six Niemen's albums presented in chronological order. The material was personally re-mastered by Czeslaw Niemen himself and NEA Studio (24 bit /96k). This boxed-set is enhanced by very informative booklet that includes introductory by Niemen as well as commentaries and many rare photos. Absolute must have for all fans of the progressive music from Europe!

    It's been five years since Earl Klugh issued the smooth chamber group offering The Spice of Life. In the interim, he stayed busy curating his Weekend of Jazz events at the Broadmoor Hotel & Resort in Colorado Springs and the Kiawah Island Golf Resorts in South Carolina, and played the festival circuit, a few choice club gigs, and select concerts. Hand Picked is an abundant 15-track collection, and Klugh's first for Heads Up International. With the exception of three duets, it's a completely solo guitar effort that focuses on a range of covers from jazz, pop, and country as well as four fine originals. The elegant reading of "Alfie" that kicks the set off is followed by a beautiful take on "Blue Moon" with Bill Frisell.
