After 5 years of silence, the Norwegian black metal crew Sarkom is back with a vengeance. They got a lot of praise for the albums “Aggravation Of Mind” and “Bestial Supremacy”, and was an active touring band around Europe. After working on other projects, Sarkom is now fully back, and “Doomsday Elite” offers a fierce and crushing black metal album. Tomás Luis de Victoria is definitely one of the most important composers in the music history of Spain. His masterpiece is the ‘Officium Defunctorum’, published in Madrid in 1605. In this requiem – written for the funeral of Maria of Austria, daughter of Emperor Charles V – the composer reached a mystical intensity of expression.

‘There is nothing like entering a church on a Saturday, standing in the semi-darkness with the scent of incense wafting through the air, lost in deep contemplation searching for an answer to those perennial questions, wherefore, when, whither and why?’ These words, from one of Tchaikovsky’s own letters, sum up the spirit behind the glorious Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, Op 41. The work is steeped in the Orthodox tradition, the choral writing provides that sense of transparency and simplicity demanded by the text, and the resulting ambience is rich in the manner familiar to Western listeners from works such as Rachmaninov’s Vespers.

Watermelon Slim and his band The Workers are tireless blues musicians, just like the masters who came before them. Their lot is to play small blues clubs, and bars and restaurants across the continent, bringing the blues to hungry ears. Once you’ve heard or seen Slim you’ll never forget it. And if you see him…you’ll hear him…I guarantee it! At a gig in Hamilton a couple of years ago, the opening act Steve Strongman (no slouch himself on blues guitar, and certainly no stranger to volume) had to wear earplugs during The Workers’ set! We, in the first row, had no earplugs so went home with ears ringing from the Mississippi rhythms and stinging lead guitar. Not a bad way to go.

…The performances, sung without a chorus but played with a string complement numbering 4-4-2-2-1, are, if not overwhelming, entirely convincing. The four soloists manage their roles admirably, and the recorded sound is excellent. (…) Incidentally, buried in the notes is an eye-popping statement that Montréal Baroque “has undertaken Bach’s complete cantatas in a pared-down version, with a one-per-part choir, as was the practice in Lutheran Germany of the time.” That would be a first, since all of the other complete and on-going series employ small choirs. There was no mention of boy sopranos.
