2013 release from the British Trip Hop trio, Head Up High reflects a series of significant changes in the trio's lives while marking the success of the bands career spanning 18 years since the release of their debut album, Who Can You Trust, an acclaimed trip-hop blueprint and the root of Morcheeba's universal success and appeal having sold millions of albums worldwide. The album plays hosts to a truly stellar mix of guest features from hip hop legend, Chali 2na (Jurassic 5), rap mogul Nature Boy Jim Kelly, the smoky vocals of James Petralli (White Denim), cheeky UK rhymers, Rizzle Kicks and the fierce French-Chilean rapper, Ana Tijoux who Paul first encountered on hit TV show, 'Breaking Bad'.

The second album of the portuguese fadista (and doctor) Katia Guerreiro. The title means "In the hands of fado" and refers to the way her devotion to this exquisite and distinctively Portuguese style has changed her life completely. Her take on it is very traditional, and she still uses only the three key instruments of 12-stringed Portuguese guitar, Spanish guitar and double bass, which some purists insist is the only authentic fado arrangement. Most of the melodies on Nas Mãos do Fado are drawn from the body of over 200 traditional fados. The full range of Katia's extraordinarily subtle charm as a singer is on show, from a whisper to a wail. Enjoy an album of amazing beauty and restrained passion.

The unjustly neglected piano quartet (J76) was completed in September of the year 1809, which the 22-year-old Weber spent in Stuttgart. It was originally offered to the publisher Hans Georg Nägeli, but he rejected it, advising the composer that it created wanton ‘confusion in the arrangement of its ideas’ and indeed too obviously imitated the ‘bizarreries’ of Beethoven. However, the work was issued a year later by the Bonn firm of Beethoven’s friend and admirer Nikolaus Simrock, whose ears were more receptive to the peculiarities of the score than Nägeli.

2013 sees the centenary of Benjamin Britten’s birth and Hyperion starts celebrating early with this disc of two of the composer’s most popular choral works, both with a Christmas relevance. The cantata Saint Nicolas tells the story of the original ‘Santa Claus’, a fourth-century saint whose acts—revitalizing three boys who had been pickled by an unscrupulous landlord being among the more dramatic—led to his canonization as patron saint of children and sailors. Britten’s lively setting is distinctly operatic, full of incident and colour—with the story brought ‘home’ through the use of congregational hymns. The part of Nicolas (here sung magnificently by Allan Clayton, already acclaimed as the heir to Peter Pears and Anthony Rolfe Johnson) is one of Britten’s great heroic tenor roles.

George Frideric Handel (23 February 1685 – 14 April 1759) was a German-born British Baroque composer famous for his operas, oratorios, anthems and organ concertos. Born in a family indifferent to music, Handel received critical training in Halle, Hamburg and Italy before settling in London (1712) as a naturalized British subject in 1727. By then he was strongly influenced by the great composers of the Italian Baroque and the middle-German polyphonic choral tradition.

Covering the Great American Songbook can be tricky, thankless work for a singer. The options for handling the material just aren't as numerous (i.e., nigh infinite) as they are for instrumentalists. Severely warping a melody, chopping it up or getting rid of it altogether work perfectly well if you're blowing through a horn. But such abstractions of voice can seem forced or simply too weird within a straight-ahead format. There's scatting, of course, and other forms of nonverbal vocalization, but they rarely score on the same level as instrumental solos, and they can turn stale or quaint-sounding pretty quickly.

Performing a powerhouse of songs from theirfirst ever "best-of", theduo tore through 16 of their greatest numbers- including four from 1982's "H2O" album. From the flirtatious "Italian Girls" and the moody "Art Of A Heartbreak", to the jubilatory "Maneater" and "Private Eyes", what we witness on this DVD is essentially two men (aided and abetted by four of thetightestmusicians in town) at their peak, which betrays a duo asskilled inclose soul harmonies as they were (and are) at rocking.

This box set reissue of the "John Lee Hooker – Portrait 10 cd (Past Perfect 2001)". Overall, the sound is very good with a few songs on the first couple of discs sounding really rough. The first 8 discs are early solo Hooker with the ocassional backing guitar or piano. Disc 9 sounds like Veejay recordings and the 10th is a live concert. Hooker mentions Lowell Fulsom and SP Leary but there is no live audience response. Good stuff though. The only drawback is that there are no liner notes at all. But if you want to fill out your collection with some great early stuff, this will be a great addition to your collection. Boogie on, Johnny Lee!

Despite the inability of the music to live up to the high standards of Jimmy Somerville's ridiculously skilled falsetto voice, the Communards' first album achieved platinum status in several countries. Somerville's spirited duet with Sarah Jane Morris on a cover of Thelma Houston's "Don't Leave Me This Way" helped push the record into the Top Ten on the U.K. charts, and a decent blend of other dancefloor fillers with Richard Coles-centric piano ballads lends variety for the ears that can't take a full album's worth of dance music.
