2013 release from the Alt-Country/Blues act. Produced by Country legend Buddy Miller, the album embodies a newfound musical bond between brothers Oliver and Chris Wood one cemented by two years on the road with a new full-time member, drummer Jano Rix. Recorded at Southern Ground Studios in Nashville, The Muse mines The Wood Brothers timeless influences - Robert Johnson, Willie Nelson, Charles Mingus - and showcases their high-lonesome harmonies, Oliver's gritty acoustic guitars, Chris virtuosic standup bass and their warrior poet lyrics. New to this recording is the shuitar, a beat-up acoustic guitar rigged with tuna cans and other noisemakers, which Jano uses (and has patented) as a percussive instrument.

Roughly a year after Year Zero – a year marked by lots of sniping with his record company first about their clueless promotion then devolving into a tirade about their general uselessness – Trent Reznor broke free of Interscope/Universal and became a free agent, releasing music where and when he wanted. To celebrate his freedom he released the four-part Ghosts, a clearinghouse of 36 instrumentals all created during the years he crafted Year Zero. It should come as no great surprise that Ghosts then plays like a sketchbook, a place where Reznor jotted down sounds and textures that flitted across his mind and then either took them no further, or decided to spin them into something entirely new for the full album.

Now this is a little more like it. The group really isn't sounding like they did at the Whiskey, but the playing by the band is pretty ballsy, and Duane's guitar is right up front and close, and he's showing some real invention within the restrictions of the pop sound that the producer was aiming for. He also plays an electric sitar on the strangest cut here, an instrumental cover of Beatles' "Norwegian Wood."

In Cinema is the magnificent and eagerly-anticipated new album from Finnish band Oddarrang. With a new home at innovative UK label Edition Records, Oddarrang s third album stands as their most accomplished to date. Not only have they confirmed the promise of the hugely successful Music Illustrated (2007) and Cathedral (2011) but they ve also developed a formidable reputation as one of the most exciting new acts to emerge from Scandinavia to date. The title In Cinema provides a clue to the darker, edgier, sound of this work compared to the earlier albums.

Recognized as one of the greatest Baroque composers, his influence during his lifetime was widespread over Europe. His best known work is a series of violin concertos known as The Four Seasons.

Voyagers is the second album by Steve Howe & Paul Sutin. Originally to be entitled Voyagers in the Blue Universe (as the album was to be about dolphins, but the idea was dropped when everybody was doing dolphins), this is Howe and Sutin's second album together after Seraphim in 1988. Sutin pre-recorded much of the album before Howe joined him in Switzerland. It was released in 1995.

You're presently reading about what may be the best album of 2007, hands down, by the most under-accorded American musical genius. Real murmurs, believable ones, came with Josh Ritter's 2006 album, Animal Year, suggesting that the Idahoan is today's Bruce Springsteen, today's Bob Dylan. He's never sounded more the part than on Historical Conquests, the follow-up to Animal. Ritter's tripping over his syllables and allusions on the opener, "To the Dogs or Whoever", dropping biblical and historical images like a fresh-faced Dylan. Except here, Ritter throws in an organ-fueled, ride-cymbal-crashing, drum-hefty clatter. It's majestic, and it's only the first three minutes. Recorded between stints on a never-ending tour, Historical reflects Ritter on the road, quick witted, a master of phraseology and of imagery. Horns show up as color, giving Ritter a soulful vibe on "Right Moves", a raucous funkiness on "Rumors," and a doleful cloudiness on "The Temptation of Adam".
