Genre: Rock | Style: Stoner Rock, Heavy Metal

…Monster Magnet's style is heavily influenced by 1970s heavy metal and space rock bands such as Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Hawkwind and Captain Beyond. In addition to recording covers such as Black Sabbath's "Into the Void" (Master of Reality, 1971) and Hawkwind's "Brainstorm" (Doremi Fasol Latido, 1972), Wyndorf sometimes incorporated elements of space rock staples into his own songs. For instance, the Dopes to Infinity title track borrows some of its lyrics from "Lord of Light" (ibid.), and Superjudge's "Twin Earth" is a reinterpretation of Captain Beyond's "Mesmerization Eclipse" (Captain Beyond, 1972)…

NOISE Ensemble, Matthew Burtner (saxophone), Nathan Brock (computer)

Burtner’s (b. 1970) interest in the whole world of sound originated from his childhood experience growing up in Alaska where the snow, wind and sea create a ceaseless soundscape. This texture finds voice in the landmark ecoacoustic composition Snowprints (2001). In this work, an electronic part created using the sounds of recorded snow sets an environmental noise element in counterpoint with the acoustic instruments. The recorded sounds create a syntax of environmental energy – the result of wind, temperature, and time at play on the snow.

Like truth, beauty resides in simplicity. When it manifests itself, it doesn't require elaborate arguments or proofs; you can't debate someone into apprehending it. It's apparent and all it requires is appreciation, or perhaps even love. Such are the songs of Lily & Madeleine. Understandably, when their debut EP, The Weight of the Globe, came out in early 2013, much was made of the fact that Lily and Madeleine Jurkiewicz are teenagers: Madeleine is eighteen and her sister is sixteen. Surely, that's important given the impressive talent on display.

York Bowen has been described as ‘the English Rachmaninov’. Volume one of the series helped to reassess Bowen’s music, and volume two is sure to develop this further. The distinguished Dutch pianist Joop Celis performs regularly as a solo, chamber and concert artist. Following volume one, International Record Review described Celis as a ‘thoroughly sympathetic advocate of Bowen’s work… powerful and poised, nimble and sensitive’………..This disc an astounding addition to the piano catalogue, both in terms of performance and repertoire.

The new album from Canadian singer Térez Montcalm her seventh has the title I Know I’ll Be Alright, and it weaves a passionate path between compositions from her own pen and some of her favourite songs by other writers, irrespective of genre. In the groove with Térez Montcalm here are such unlikely figures as Gilbert Bécaud, Neil Young, David Bowie or Michael Jackson, and her versions of the titles by the latter have a stunning fervour and freedom to them. Montcalm makes no secret of the fact that she derives just as much pleasure from 'covers' as she does from her own compositions. Five brand-new songs in all, inspired by her own life-experiences.

A solo album is always, for a musician, something special. Then, when the musician is serious, intact, as Franco D' Andrea, then the solo album takes on a value even higher. Why Today is the result of a research work and preparation, which lasted over a year, finally resulted in a recording session that originated about two hours of music.
