An intriguing choral work from Austrian Ernst Krenek, in which the composer manages to successfully combine the strict and complex harmonics of high renaissance polyphony with the laws of dodecaphony. The genres seem to be diametrically opposed to each other; the former the summit of tonality, the latter, of course, atonal. This results in a beautifully sung piece which, in all its austerity, is reminiscent of Stravinsky’s religious chants.

The friendly tradition of drinking mate served as inspiration for Argentinean born, New York based trumpeter Diego Urcola. For his playfully titled new recording Mates, Urcola wanted to mirror this give and take between friends (or “mates”) with that of the musical duet. To achieve this, the trumpeter recorded a number of intimate meetings with a handful of his closest musical associates, including bassist Avishai Cohen, vibraphonist Dave Samuels, harpist Edmar Castañeda and bandoneón player Juan Dargenton.

As 2009 was heading to a close, Oli, Steve and Iain had left Serpico, the band that brought them together, and turned their thoughts to a handful of riffs and ideas that they had been working on.By the spring of 2010, after several attempts at finding the right drummer, Dave was asked to "help out" on drums for the band's first demo (Steve and Dave had been in a band together a few years previously called Read it and Weep). The resulting self recorded 4 song demo was released, and by the time the first gig came in January 2011, the demo had been ordered from all corners of the UK and even abroad.The first full length A Ritual Spirit L.P. is almost here, 'Carnival Carnivorous' will be out soon via Oli and Steve's label Disposable Noise. These are the songs the band wanted to write, they followed no mould or trend and emerged with an album they are proud of. Ask any of them what it sounds like, and they will say it sounds like A RITUAL SPIRIT.

If there is one Swedish composer in the early 20th century who in some way can compare with Sibelius and Nielsen, it is Wilhelm Stenhammar. The seven quartets (of which one, in F minor, was withdrawn by the composer soon after its first performance) were written over the space of 22 years, and mirror Stenhammar’s development, from full-blown Romanticism to a more sparse and formally concentrated idiom.
