What an impressive composer Polovinkin is turning out to have been. We noted three months ago that his Symphony No. 9 contained connections with the late Russian Romanticism of the Mighty Five, making that work quite unlike what one might expect from a Soviet composing a symphony in wartime. The Seventh comes from two years earlier (1942), begun in Moscow and finished in evacuation quarters in Tashkent. It’s quite a bit shorter …….

An enchanting programme of Russian music for string quartet from the acclaimed Kuss Quartet. The multiple-composer 'Variations on a Russian folk song' has composers such as Scriabin, Rimsky-Korsakov, Glazunov and Lyadov rub shoulders with lesser-known names such as Vitols, Blumenfeld, Ewald, Winkler, Sokolov and Artsybuschev – each composer contributing a variation.

My Foolish Heart is an anniversary release celebrating 25 years of the Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette trio's traveling and performing together despite the rich and varied individual careers of its members. Recorded in 2001 at the Montreux Jazz Festival, Jarrett held the tape close to the vest until what he felt was the right time for release – whatever that means. The bottom line is, listeners are very fortunate to have it. The official live offerings by this group have always been crystalline affairs of deep swinging communication, no matter the material. Not only is My Foolish Heart no exception, it is perhaps the standard by which the others should be judged.

Frightened Rabbit is among the most acclaimed bands of the 2000 s, earning wide-ranging critical applause and a fervent international fan following with their emotionally exhilarating melodies and scathingly frank lyricism. The band's 2010's full-length, The Winter Of Mixed Drinks (FatCat Records), was met with unanimous acclaim both here and at home. The Guardian's Dave Simpson declared that "(Scott Hutchison's) songwriting is sharp throughout and most of their songs - with themes of escape, freedom and reinvention - have huge impassioned choruses that are made to be shouted from the nearest available mountain…This is the sound of a band upping their game."

    Sony/Epic MHCP 637 | rel: 1999 | 410mb

Stevie Ray Vaughan's second album, Couldn't Stand the Weather, pretty much did everything a second album should do: it confirmed that the acclaimed debut was no fluke, while matching, if not bettering, the sales of its predecessor, thereby cementing Vaughan's status as a giant of modern blues. So why does it feel like a letdown? Perhaps because it simply offers more of the same, all the while relying heavily on covers. Of the eight songs, half are covers, while two of his four originals are instrumentals – not necessarily a bad thing, but it gives the impression that Vaughan threw the album together in a rush, even if he didn't. Nevertheless, Couldn't Stand the Weather feels a bit like a holding pattern, since there's no elaboration on Double Trouble's core sound and no great strides forward, whether it's in Vaughan's songwriting or musicianship.

More than 40 years into his career, Chris Farlowe proves he can still deliver a superb show with this live performance, running just over an hour, that captures the '60s/'70s U.K. soul legend near top form. Farlowe is still a soul shouter with the best of them, even if he has to make a few concessions to the calendar at age 66. The key to his success, ranging through material from across his history (including one original, "I Don't Want to Sing the Blues No More"), is that his voice has held up, and he still feels the music inside. And some of the songs represented here, such as "Out of Time," actually work better than they did in their original recordings – Farlowe has, fortunately, outlived the worst excesses of some of the periods in which he recorded, and has lived to put down updated (and upgraded) renditions of various chunks of his history, with a solid lean and mean band.

Pianist Anthony Goldstone continues his survey of Russian piano literature for Divine Art in Russian Piano Music, Vol. 3: Reinhold Glière. Glière is best known outside of Russia for his "Russian Sailors Dance" from the ballet The Red Poppy; deeper listeners know him through his huge third symphony "Il'ya Murometz." Glière was one of the shining lights of the Soviet period, a composer born one year behind Rachmaninov who had never left, submerged fully in the language …….

Genre: Jazz | Label: HighNote Records

Tom Harrell has had a lot of success with his series of quintet recordings for HighNote, but his fifth release for the label, which uses the same musicians as the first four CDs (tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, pianist Danny Grissett, bassist Ugonna Okegwo, and drummer Johnathan Blake), takes a different path, featuring the full band on four of the eleven tracks, then in various configurations from solo to duo, trio, and quartet. He explodes out of the box with a fiery take of Dizzy Gillespie's "Blue 'N' Boogie" accompanied solely by Blake. Harrell previously recorded his mellow ballad "Journey to the Stars" as a duet with Grissett, but for this session, he overdubs several muted trumpets in spots.
