Albéric Magnard really is the great so-far-undiscovered master of French music. Born in 1865 (the same year as Sibelius, Nielsen and Glazunov), the son of the managing editor of Le Figaro, his reticent personality prevented him from courting fame or even performances of his music.
His four-movement symphonies are substantial in length, cyclic in character, serious, attractively scored, slightly melancholic, and well worth getting to know.

Viktor Ullmann has been featured mostly in collections of compositions from the Nazis' "model" concentration camp at Terezin (Theresienstadt), where Jews were permitted some forms of artistic expression and where he wrote the last three of the seven sonatas heard here. But it is becoming clear that Ullmann's is a distinctive voice that deserves to be treated individually.

Hot House is the seventh recording by the duo of pianist Chick Corea and vibraphonist Gary Burton. This time out, Corea and Burton picked pieces by some of their favorite composers – mostly from the jazz world, of course – yet chose compositions that were less than obvious. A shining example is "Can't We Be Friends," an obscure standard closely associated with Art Tatum. Though it's a pop song, Tatum completely reinvented it in his image. In Corea's arrangement, the duo walks a balanced line between classic American pop, jazz modernism, and the legendary pianist's swinging take on stride.

Pianist/singer Jim Pearce's records inevitably draw comparisons to those of fellow ivory tickling wordsmith Mose Allison. The fact that both are genre-bending virtuosi with dry as champagne humor, who play the same instrument is where all similarities end.

7 Wishes is the third studio album by the band Night Ranger, released in 1985 and produced by Pat Glasser. The title of "Four in the Morning (I Can't Take Anymore)" describes the time of day Jack Blades wrote the song. In an interview with the Songfacts website, he explained, "Literally, I wrote that song at 4 in the morning. I mean, I woke up, and I had an idea, (singing) 'I can't take anymore, I can't fake anymore, it's such a hard time loving you. It also believed that Mötley Crüe's drummer Tommy Lee joined Night Ranger and did backing vocals on the song Night Machine.

Tim Easton has always been a road warrior, constantly touring, and he's also kept himself pretty busy in the studio throughout his career, and both of these things are good, because he's a pretty darn good songwriter, and he sings with a calm assurance that he's got a pretty darn good song to sing, all of which makes him something close to a modern Americana treasure.

Every once in a great while, the stars align and the muses visit a concert hall to smile beneficently on the musicians assembled there. How else to account for the ineffable chemistry that infuses the best jazz concerts? Well, the muses were working overtime when vibraphonist Gary Burton took to the stage with the Hum Trio and then The Ahmad Jamal Trio. The resulting performance must rank among these musicians best work, with the kind of soul-deep communication that is often expected but so rarely occurs live in concert.

This remarkable concert at the Paris Olympia in March 1960 features the same group(less Cannonball Adderley) that recorded 'Freddie Freeloader' on Miles Davis's classic album 'Kind of Blue' a year or so earlier but they sound very different here. John Coltrane was reluctant to be part of this European tour and was anxious to leave Miles and start his own band. Despite this he's in absolutely blistering form although some members of the audience are clearly perturbed by the intensity of his playing. The recording quality is excellent and it's a mystery why this concert hasn't received more attention.

Taking a sharper, re-invigorated approach to the production, on this, their 20th album, Saxon have produced 10 of their strongest, heaviest and most inspired songs for many-a-year, and a more than worthy successor to their last album “A Call To Arms”.“Less tricks, more power!” roars frontman and founding father Biff Byford, “my brief to the band was to be raw, be real and not be afraid to look back at the old classic material for inspiration.”

British breakthrough band The Virginmarys are a powerhouse trio who've spent the past two years tearing through Europe with a sound the BBC hailed as "raw, intoxicating rock and roll in the finest traditions of the genre." Kerrang! hailed the group with a four-star review, praising them for "channeling the pure rock grooves of Zeppelin; tight, explosive and wired." They arrive on this side of the pond with their fiery full-length debut, King Of Conflict, produced by Toby Jepson and mixed by Chris Sheldon (Pixies, Foo Fighters). The big, bouncy and bombastic album captures The Virginmarys at their thrilling best.
