American composer Benjamin Broening (b. 1967) drew inspiration for the eight haunting pieces on this disc from the natural world in Estonia. The combinations of acoustical instruments and electronics are so deftly achieved that textures come and go with surprising enchantment and tension. The disc’s title comes from the virtuosic flute solo that evokes a conflicted environment. Eighth blackbird, the chamber ensemble founded at Oberlin College, play Broening’s collection to the expressive skies.

This pair of single-movement viola concertos written for Yuri Bashmet justify his renown. In both, he is able to draw an impressive variety of expressions from his instrument with seeming ease. On the other hand, it's obvious there was a lot of thought and care put into his interpretations. The concertos need thoughtful interpretations by the soloist and the conductor, not because the pieces are necessarily complex in rhythm or harmony, but they are complex in tone and color………

The U.S. Steinway & Sons label, associated with the venerable piano maker, has embarked on a series of handsomely designed, well-annotated releases that often explore undeservedly neglected repertory. The piano sonatas of Viktor Ullmann, who was gassed at Auschwitz in 1944, fit that description. Ullmann has been featured mostly in collections of compositions from the Nazis' "model" concentration camp at Terezin (Theresienstadt), where Jews were permitted some forms of artistic expression and where he wrote the last three of the seven sonatas heard here. This great debut album was originally released in 1969 by Riviera label and at the time was one of the earliest French rock records! LP consisted a powerful collection of largely instrumental jazz-blues-rock tracks with strong psychedelic and funk influences with electric guitars, Hammond organ, electric violin and saxophone parts being backed by very busy rhythm section and strong, soulful vocal of Joel Dayde. This twisted musical mixture is pretty hard to describe, but it should appeal to the fans of Electric Flag, early Funkadelic, Chicago Transit Authority, early Family and Larry Coryell. It's worth noting that popular US vinyl version released by Mercury Records in 1970 (with the same cover design) was a compilation of tracks from first two albums.

Album played by the orchestra of the pianist, organist, composer and director Frank Chacksfield English (East Sussex, 1914-1995), internationally well known especially in the 50s and 60s for his playing style of easy listening music. This five-piece blues band, all members of which were born in Scotland, was formed in the early 80s by Tim Elliott (harmonica/vocals) and John Bruce (guitar). After numerous personnel changes during their formative and semi-professional years, by the middle of the decade they settled into a hard driving and highly regarded band. In the mid-80s, Blues ‘N’ Trouble toured as support band to some visitors from the USA, including Robert Cray, B.B. King, Charlie Musselwhite, Pinetop Perkins and Junior Wells. Blues ‘N’ Trouble continued to work a busy schedule during the next 20 years, appearing at numerous UK venues and also playing festivals around the world.
