The John Barry Seven take pride of place above the title on this 40-track CD, called Drumbeat after a BBC TV series that enjoyed a one-off 22-week run in the summer of 1959. Buddy Holly, Cliff Richard, Russ Conway and Connie Francis were in the top ten that hot summer, and Barry’s guest artists, though not of that elevated status, did feature singers who were about to become stars and remain household names, including Adam Faith and Dusty Springfield, one of the Lana Sisters.
Federico Mompou's Musica Callada (Music of Silence) consists of 28 pieces grouped into four books, ranging in length from less than a minute to slightly more than four. The works are not, obviously, all that silent, nor do they tax the listener's patience with endless repetition or static colors and harmonies. In fact, there's quite a bit of variety here, but it takes place within the framework of a certain exquisite simplicity of utterance that's very special, and very beautiful. The most noteworthy aspect of the music is its harmonic range, running from the highly dissonant to the most folk-like, even primitive.
Antonio de Cabezón was the most important composer of Spain’s Golden Age, the 16th century. He served at the court of Charles V, and was the music teacher of his children with Isabella of Portugal.
Rising star Alice Sara Ott’s new recording documents her summer 2012 rite of passage debut at the prestigious White Nights Festival. Alice Sara Ott’s challenging programme centers upon Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition. Her virtuosic technique and youthful brilliance deliver the majesty, colours and spontaneity that this music requires. The power, passion and beauty which Alice Sara brings to Schubert’s thrilling Sonata No. 17 is insightful and memorable.
“Panagia” is Stephan Micus’ 20th album for ECM, and it coincides with his 60th birthday in January 2013. The Greek word Panagia is one of the names of the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ. Stephan Micus’ album takes six Byzantine Greek prayers and sets them in his own inimitable way with instruments he has collected in years of travels round the world. “The album alternates sung poems with instrumental tracks and thus has a clearly symmetrical, even ritualistic, structure”, says Micus.
…the whole album was resplendent in a happy balance of all of these creative elements, before excessive experimentation (musical and chemical) began affecting the band's ability to do a straightforward song. The group never made a better album, and few artists from the era ever did.
Didge Digital left the group and he was replaced by former UFO member Jem Davis. Dead Man's Shoes was released in 1995 and soon after band slowly disbanded. One of the few bands who sing and play totally live.
