The Brilliant Classics set stands out for several reasons. First, they attempted (though did not fully succeed) to create a complete set entirely recorded on period instruments, using historically informed performances. As their web site states, "The new recordings follow scrupulously the newest developments and insights offered by the leading Early Music scholars as regards the performance practice of Baroque music in general and the music of Bach in particular."…

I'm a Wyoming-based, Americana singer/songwriter that embraces many styles of roots music. The music I write - whether expressed as alt-country, rock, red dirt, folk, or blues - is grounded in real life and personal experience which gives it a very honest and relatable quality.

Produced in association with Valgeir Sigurðsson , 'Tales of a GrassWidow' features eleven songs and, in keeping with prior compositions, synthesizes electronic and organic music conveying a compelling futuristic, return-to-nature sound. Amongst the 11 tracks that weave together to create 'Tales of a GrassWidow' is 'Gravediggress', whose recent release to the web saw CocoRosie enthusiastically welcomed back by fans and critics alike. Itʼs a foreboding track, representative of the albumʼs overarching theme, the tale of an imagined conversation between an abandoned child and an outcast old woman. Their voices blend and overlap, suggesting the woman and child are the same person.

Recently (May 23th) we lost the great french-greek songwriter and singer Georges Moustaki. Georges was very popular in Greece and many of his songs have been released with greek lyrics by singers like Giorgos Dalaras and Antonis Kaloyiannis. His reputation skyrocketed after the huge success of the top hit "Le meteque" in 1969. This nice collection from Master Serie, contains 17 well known hits of Moustaki in their original versions. Bon voyage Georges.

With ten studio releases and almost as many live recordings available, there will surely be some people saying "not more Masada!" Sanhedrin is a collection of studio outtakes, recorded at eight different sessions from 1994 through 1997. All of these tunes but one ("Nefesh") have been released in other takes before, but that's not really the point. This band has become one of the finest jazz ensembles of the last several decades, and there will probably come a time when folks will be drooling over any previously unreleased scraps the same way they do today over lost Monk and Coltrane recordings. The improvisations and interactions – not to mention the dynamics – can change from one performance to the next, and it's interesting to hear how these players approach the tunes on different takes.

Liner Notes by William Parker: “I see three small boats with three musicians crossing this lovely lake of sound they reach the shore and it began to rain sunlight”. If the same piece of music is played multiple times it will take on a new life at each performance. When improvisation is added the music becomes new music that did not exist before. The music I speak about is the music coming from “HEAR in NOW”, the trio consisting of Mazz Swift on violin, Tomeka Reid on cello and Silvia Bolognesi on bass. They begin by telling us stories, these stories have all kinds of twists and turns plots and counterplots. They may go back into history or move forward into the future.

Richie Havens is an American folk artist and was the opening act at the now legendary Woodstock festival in August 1969. Although a respected artist noted for his fast and somewhat unorthodox guitar style Richie Havens had been making waves in music circles since the mid sixties and his reputation had spread further following his record deal with Verve records in 1967 and the release of his debut album for the label Mixed Bag. By the time of the Woodstock festival in August 1969 Richie Havens had released two more albums; Something Else Again in 1968 and the double album Richard P Havens 1983. Further successful albums followed in the seventies and Richie Havens continues to tour and release albums on a regular basis.

Celebrating his 80th birthday in 2012, Per Nørgård is undoubtedly one of the most important Danish composers since Nielsen. This disc brings together his two violin concertos as well as the orchestral work Spaces of Time. The music of Helle Nacht (‘bright night’) has several transparent layers, and at each hearing the listener will be able to experience the work differently. The transparency of the music is even more pronounced in the version for chamber orchestra, created especially for Peter Herresthal.

Although most of Heinrich Schütz's surviving music is for the church, his first published work was this set of Italian madrigals–a remarkable collection of pieces that perfectly capture the style while continually throwing off sparks of originality. Dedicated to a patron back in Germany who funded his two-year study in Venice with the great master, Giovanni Gabrieli, these 19 madrigals are rich in imagery and occasionally make tantalizingly brief forays into harmonic territory reminiscent of Gesualdo.
