    Airto Moreira - Homeless (2000)

    Genre: Fusion, Latin Jazz

Although Airto Moreira was never a jazz purist, most of his work has been jazz-oriented. From his years with Chick Corea's first Return to Forever lineup to his classic CTI dates of the 1970s to his work on wife Flora Purim's albums, the Brazilian drummer/vocalist has been known for combining jazz with Brazilian music, rock, and funk. No one could ever accuse Purim's husband of being someone who is only interested in showing the world how fast he can play John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," but it is safe to say that most of Moreira's work has been jazz-oriented even though it isn't straight-ahead bop. Homeless, however, is a Moreira project that has very little to do with jazz. This diverse, highly rhythmic CD draws on everything from pop, funk, hip-hop, and Afro-Brazilian tribal chanting to club and rave music, but jazz considerations aren't a priority.

Instrumental music orchestrated with banjos is offered this time by the British composer, arranger and musical director Geoff Love (Yorkshire, 1917-91) and his Banjo Band. In addition to his orchestra -formed in 1955-, also created from the 70s his own Banjo Band, successfully launching discs on major themes of war movies, love, etc.. One of them is this' Banjo movie parade', devised with producer Norman Newell after a New York joint assistance to the musical 'No, No, Nanette! ', in which they release a banjo inspired topic from 'I want to be happy ' and that led them to select the repertoire of 13 movie themes, popular in those years, included on this recording.

Stan Getz with his sax, accompanied by Kenny Barron (piano), George Mraz (bass) and Victor Lewis (drums) recorded these jazz sessions in March 1989 (two years before his death), in Hollywood, for the label A & M of his friend Herb Alpert. But Alpert was more interested then launching another orchestral production by Getz, 'Apasionado', and left in the drawer that work. Over the years Alpert rediscovered the 'lost sessions', dedicated to bossas and ballads, and resolved to publish in 2003. Getz played his best music in the last years of his life and in this album plays with an unusual force and sweetness.
