The ornate trappings of an old cathedral make the perfect backdrop for a band whose gothic feel was a large part of its initial success. Procol Harum was in fine form for this show recorded for the cameras on the venerable British outfit's final date of its extensive 2003 world tour. This isn't entirely the greatest-hits summary that some might have wanted…

…Another major strong point of this recording is the sound; the German audiophile label MDG outdoes itself here in an old riding stadium that displays the music's serenade-like textures to beautiful effect. Chamber players should absolutely get to know this music. There is nothing in the individual lines that would challenge good student musicians, but they stand to learn a great deal about subtle balance and interaction by playing this music. And they'll give their audiences a pleasant surprise, too.

Compilation album with a collection of 16 tracks already published previously by the same label. Most of the cuts (13) are played by different orchestras in the style called 'European tango'. Among them is Werner Tauber with 7 performances, as well as Ballroom Orchestra with two. Three of the tracks are played and sung by the Mauricio Jerez Quintet, which offering a distinct style closer to the styling of Argentine tango.

Classical / Chamber Music

France's Quatuor Ebène has been known for its classical-pop fusion experiments (they dislike the term "crossover"). Here they stick with classical string quartet pieces, but their style and choice of music is still plenty unusual. The chief repertory attraction here is Fanny Mendelssohn's String Quartet in E flat major, composed in 1834. This work, the composer's only string quartet, is not usually included in comparisons of music by Felix Mendelssohn and his older sister, but it deserves to be better known.

Bassist George Anderson of Shakatak fame is back with his sophomore release titled Expressions, a project that has everything, including a more than slight resemblance to his work with the acid jazz group with which he is most notably associated. As with Shakatak, the grooves here are catchy, tight, and full. Joining Anderson on this cool work is a pair of competent vocalists who certainly deserve separate recognition for their standout efforts: Debby Bracknell, whose sweet, whispery and seductive vocals can be heard throughout the recording, and Fil Straughan who does a wonderful job on the track “Into U.”
