The ornate trappings of an old cathedral make the perfect backdrop for a band whose gothic feel was a large part of its initial success. Procol Harum was in fine form for this show recorded for the cameras on the venerable British outfit's final date of its extensive 2003 world tour. This isn't entirely the greatest-hits summary that some might have wanted…

The first (and best) volume of a 4CD BoxSet series with relaxing and chillout vocal jazz hits, in their original recordings. The interesting and beautiful feature of these series, is the combination of classical jazz legends like Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald with today's Nu-Jazz stars, in the same collection. The result is a delightful musical experience. Enjoy.

…Another major strong point of this recording is the sound; the German audiophile label MDG outdoes itself here in an old riding stadium that displays the music's serenade-like textures to beautiful effect. Chamber players should absolutely get to know this music. There is nothing in the individual lines that would challenge good student musicians, but they stand to learn a great deal about subtle balance and interaction by playing this music. And they'll give their audiences a pleasant surprise, too.

2013 release from the Folk/Americana singer/songwriter. Massachusetts is an ostensibly real place. But Massachusetts is also just symbolic name for the emotional geography of Lori McKenna's songs. There are strong resemblances between Lori McKenna's Massachusetts and the real thing. Both are infused with history, where every turn takes you down some road with a tale to tell, maybe a story of your own or of the ones who came before, with hopes and dreams and loves and losses just like yours. They are places of extremes, where love can be a perfect summer day or a bleak November sky, and life can be as wistful as the dead of winter reminiscing of a greener spring.

France's Quatuor Ebène has been known for its classical-pop fusion experiments (they dislike the term "crossover"). Here they stick with classical string quartet pieces, but their style and choice of music is still plenty unusual. The chief repertory attraction here is Fanny Mendelssohn's String Quartet in E flat major, composed in 1834. This work, the composer's only string quartet, is not usually included in comparisons of music by Felix Mendelssohn and his older sister, but it deserves to be better known.

This album with the new-flamenco guitarist Oscar Lopez, won the 2002 Juno Award of Best Instrumental Album of the year. The album is inspired by Lopez's inner voice, Armando - Lopez's middle name, and noted by some as the "other" Lopez persona. "Armando is as much a part of me as Oscar," he explains. "He has a strong voice, and so I decided that this album was his chance for self-expression." A 'must have' album of the charismatic guitarist. Enjoy.

Bassist George Anderson of Shakatak fame is back with his sophomore release titled Expressions, a project that has everything, including a more than slight resemblance to his work with the acid jazz group with which he is most notably associated. As with Shakatak, the grooves here are catchy, tight, and full. Joining Anderson on this cool work is a pair of competent vocalists who certainly deserve separate recognition for their standout efforts: Debby Bracknell, whose sweet, whispery and seductive vocals can be heard throughout the recording, and Fil Straughan who does a wonderful job on the track “Into U.”

The exquisite, chamber-like, electro-acoustic jazz played by the Luso-Canadian trio Lama caught attentions with its debut release (“Oneiros”) last year. Now, double bassist and bandleader Gonçalo Almeida, trumpeter Susana Santos Silva and drummer Greg Smith are back for more lyrical, but abstract, music with a very special guest: New York tenor saxophonist and clarinetist Chris Speed. The combination couldn’t be more natural: Speed is a master architect of the quiet zone of sound organization, as shown by projects like the exotic Claudia Quintet. His introspective, Warne Marsh-like approach matches very well with Santos Silva’s sometimes melancholic trumpet and flugelhorn.
