Second album of Les Baxter conducting the 101 Strings Orchestra . Baxter accepted the challenge of launching a series of new titles, fluctuating from subjects with simple melodies to excitingly complex orchestral works, which enjoyed an added risk on his image as an orchestrator. In his creative work mixed the sophistication of European styles, African sensuality, the South American rhythm and cheerful English modernity.

Although during the 50s merengue began as a commercial musical style, it was not until the 80s when lived its golden age. In the late 80s the rhythm section was musically modified and simplified, while ceased to be a mere transcriber of internationally famous melodies. At that time the Cocoband emerged, led by Alfonso "Pochi" Vásquez. Rich style rhythm, strong personality and simple musical structure assumed them immediate popular success and recognition as orchestra revelation in Dominican Republic. They came to stay in the Billboard chart for 30 weeks and won in Mexico, Colombia and Venezuela.

A new and very efficient band, even though its musicians are only little influenced by the music of YES, ("Relayer" is one of the most adventurous albums issued by Jon ANDERSON's band in the Seventies), RELAYER allies the refinement of beautiful piano parts with a passionate energy. Their influences come from Progressive rock (KANSAS or RUSH), and from neo Progressive (MARILLION or NOW), this blend of sophistication and energy also evoking a kind of DREAM THEATER whose vocals would be sung by the leader of YES.

After the eruptive excitement of their Live At Belleville album, which was widely praised around the world (and secured for leader Arild Andersen the Prix du Musicien Européen 2008 from the Academie du Jazz in France), the trio now delivers a studio album. In Oslo’s Rainbow, bassist Andersen, tenorist Tommy Smith and Paolo Vinaccia rechanneled their music’s energies into a programme of soulful ballads and mid-tempo free-floating sound explorations.

Guitarist Chris Flory was there in the ‘70s as one of the young musicians playing mainstream swing and, as part of that generation, he has kept the legacy of mainstream swing guitar alive while simply playing in his own musical personality. One of the top straight ahead guitarists of the past 35 years, throughout this CD, in this reunion with Scott Hamilton, Chris Flory brings out the best in Scott and vice versa, making this disc one of the high points of their recent careers. This generally interesting but only adequately recorded set, which was issued for the first time on this 1996 CD, features duets played by Zoot Sims (doubling on tenor and soprano) and guitarist Bucky Pizzarelli. The pair mostly sticks to swinging standards, other than Neal Hefti's "Fred" and Rod McKuen's "Jean," and there are some strong moments (particularly on "Lester Leaps In," "Limehouse Blues" and "Softly As In a Morning Sunrise" ), but one does miss the bass and drums after awhile.

It is obvious from the music of his group that Marcus Miller badly misses Miles Davis. The funky grooves he uses on this CD sound like a continuation of Davis' later band, Michael "Patches" Stewart contributes muted trumpet in Davis' style, altoist Kenny Garrett is among Miller's sidemen, and Miles Davis himself (along with the voices of several other notables in very brief moments) pops up twice on Miller's release. Marcus Miller's electric bass is a major force throughout the music. Samples are used intelligently, a tribute is paid to the late guitarist Eric Gale (Hiram Bullock starts off his solo sounding uncannily like Gale), "Strange Fruit" (a feature for Miller's bass clarinet) gets a revamping, and all of the music is both danceable and full of development.
