One of the prime figures in the growth of Krautrock, Conrad Schnitzler made important contributions to the early history of Kraftwerk and Kluster. Like many in the Krautrock community, Schnitzler was greatly inspired by influences in the visual artistic world as well as the musical; he studied sculpture with Joseph Beuys, and composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen, also looking to John Cage and Pierre Schaeffer for inspiration. By 1969, he was working with Tangerine Dream, with whom he recorded Electronic Meditation. The album became one of the most distinctive in TD's discography, and Schnitzler deserved much of the credit for its chance-taking approach. …

German musician Joachim Witt counts among the few survivors of the German New Wave that dominated the airwaves in the early '80s: After years of struggling to regain the popularity he found with his hit single "Goldener Reiter" (Golden Rider), he managed to launch a serious comeback in the second half of the '90s with his album Bayreuth 1 and a single called "Die Flut" (The Flood), whose Wagnerian pomp-meets-heavy-guitars aesthetic fit into the Neue Deutsche Härte (new German heaviness) trend spearheaded by Rammstein. …

Current group formed by the former Quaterna Requiem guitar-player Junior Jones, Index sounds very much like that group or Apocalypse. The Brazilian musicians play Progressive rock in the classic style, in which electric and acoustic guitars always come to support the keyboards (Hammond organ and Moog). The third opus is back with the all-instrumental formula, and simply called "Identidade" (2005). Once again published as a joint-venture between the Musea and Rock Symphony labels, this beautiful piece of art displays eight tracks both delicate and filled with symphonism, highlighting a final suite clocking at 13 minutes.

Fragments of the Inner Shadow is the full-length debut album from German progressive/power metal band Javelin, but unlike a lot of bands making their debut these days, this band has been around since 1982. Despite releasing a pair of EPs (1997’s Seasons of Grey and 2009’s Dark Broken Land), they’re only now delivering a proper album.f you like your power metal on the heavy side, Javelin is a band that is well worth discovering. Hopefully their follow-up won’t be quite as long in the making.
