Nino Rota (1911-79) is best known for his many film scores. That doesn't mean that he couldn't write great music for other purposes, as this highly interesting program demonstrates. His idiom is conservative harmonically but highly imaginative, full of melody and mood. All three of these pieces have been recorded before. If you don't have them yet, these performances are done with conviction. Bronzi is a good conductor as well as a fine cellist; and his reading of the Concerto for Strings is intense and well balanced ………

Tinariwen’s identity as a band is tightly bound up in the Sahara. They are named for the vast empty spaces traversed by the Kel Tamashek (aka Tuareg), traditional nomads for whom modern borders have been problematic. The band formed in Libya while in exile from Mali, and has always made music that passionately evokes its home; their last album was recorded in the open air of that desert. Such an arrangement was not possible this time. The political situation in Mali made returning to the northern desert untenable, and though they’ve been driven from power in most places, the specter of Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreban organization ideologically opposed to musicstill looms across a large swath of the Sahara.

This album was one of the highlights of the career of trombonist Urban Clifford "Urbie" Green (Alabama, 1926). Worked from the late 40s with 'big bands' and was gradually achieving enormous prestige as an interpreter of his instrument, which caused him to be considered the most valuable trombonist for the recording industry. Urbie recorded with almost every jazz bands during the '50s and '60s and came to form his own band, with which he launched almost thirty discs. His elegant style and his acting versatility with his band achieved a unique listening experience.

Elis has been considered the best Brazilian singer of all time only surpassed by singer Tim Maia. This album was arguably the most successful of his career, and is recognized as one of the most representative of Brazilian popular music. The idea for the album came out of that Elis developed alone one season titled 'False brilhante' (from late 1975 to early 1977), which reached over 1,200 performances. With part of the repertoire she performed this record was made.
