A collection of classics sides of the 20's and 30's from the barrelhouse piano of juke-joints and turpentine camps to early, raggy blues and the beginnings of boogie-woogie. This is a ground breaking panorama of the greatest early American vintage piano artists offering the full flavor of their times and artistry.

Pianist Michel Camilo made his recording debut as a leader with this session for the Japanese King label. Camilo was anxious to show everything, and did so on such cuts as "Thinking Of You" and the title track. He ripped through phrases, added powerhouse chords and rippling lines, switched tempos and meters, and moved from a hard bop feel to an Afro-Latin groove in the middle of a piece. His intensity and energy were impressive, but at times he tried too much and stumbled getting back to the melody…It wasn't an unflawed debut, but Camilo showed that he would be a pianist to be reckoned with down the line.

Four years after the Quintet for Oboe and String Quartet Aho wrote one to showcase the talents of Juhani Tapaninen, the Finnish Radio orchestra’s solo bassoonist. Like the Seven Inventions it is cast in several movements, played without a break, and it also has a clear, overarching narrative.The Ouvertüre starts comically enough, with instrumental brays and slides, the overall sound bright and clear. The Gershwin-like melody played over pizzicato strings is particularly memorable (2:26 onwards excerpt ) as is the one at the beginning of ‘Parodie’, the second movement…..

The Spanish saxophonist, musician and composer Pedro Iturralde is one of the two most relevant figures for jazz in Spain. Iturralde has always stood out for his forceful sound, agile phrasing and ability to contribute in his compositions to popular roots. But all their music is not only jazz: he has managed to merge jazz with both 'flamenco' (after Miles Davis) and pop. In this last line fits this album.

This soundtrack had for Vangelis a huge popularity and was certainly one of his most relevant and famous creations. The album consists of twelve songs that are really into five distinct tracks: except 'Hispaniola', items 7 and 8 are merged into a single musical passage and the other on compositional merge seamlessly trios.

In early 1973, Genesis allowed the taping of a couple of live shows for broadcast in America as part of the King Biscuit Flower Hour syndicated radio show – most of their current set, drawn from their albums up through 1972's Foxtrot, was represented. A few months later, Tony Stratton-Smith, the head of Charisma Records, to which the group was signed, approached them about allowing him to fill the extended gap between Foxtrot and their next album, Selling England by the Pound, by releasing a live album from this same taped performance.
