But that hasn't stopped collectors from seeking and issuing long overlooked broadcasts, telecasts, and private recordings. While a cursory look at the song list on the back cover might make one think that this CD is compiled with tracks from earlier Smith releases on Storyville, that is not the case, as only one song has previously appeared anywhere, while most of the repertoire will be familiar to his longtime fans…

After the death of Nino Rota in 1979 the record producer Hal Willner released this album dedicated to him on his work with Fellini. It's a short but fruitful exploration of his music, but not collecting original works, but played by a handful of notable musicians and jazz groups such as the pianist 'Jaki Byard' (dead in 1999), guitarist Bill Frisell, vibraphonist Dave Samuels, saxophonist Steve Lacy and others as Sharon Freeman, Deborah Harry, Wynton Marsalis and Kenny Barron, integrated in groups like David Amtam Quintet or a sextet with William Fischer.

The late Tal Farlow was never recorded often enough during his career, so the appearance of this duo date with the French guitarist Philippe Petit is a welcome addition to his discography. Although a generation apart in age, the two players mesh rather well, with the two of them alternating between lead and rhythm on well-crafted versions of favorite standards such as "Autumn Leaves," "Body and Soul," and "Tenderly." This CD should greatly appeal to fans of bop guitar. (CD Universe).
