Los Lobos were together for 33 years before they got around to making a live album, but it didn't take long for them to grow fond of the format; Disconnected in New York City is the fourth concert set the veteran East L.A. band has released since 2005. As the title suggests, Disconnected in New York City was recorded during an acoustic gig at the City Winery in N.Y.C., and shows off the more intimate and easygoing side of the group's musical personality, with the absence of amps taking some of the bite out of David Hidalgo's guitar solos, often the high point of their gigs. (He does get to show off his chops on "Tin Can Trust," and they're as impressive as ever.)

With the release of 2013's 13, metal deities Black Sabbath came back not just with their first studio album since 1995, but with a return to the inspired sludginess and demonic crunch of some of their classic early material. The band embarked on a massive tour in support of the album, and Gathered in Their Masses captures live performances from the first two kick-off gigs in Melbourne, Australia. All of the band's original members are present except drummer Bill Ward, and the group powered through set lists somewhat light on material from newer album 13, but padded generously with crowd favorites from the band's untouchable first six albums. Newer jams like "End of the Beginning" sit beside metal blueprints like "Iron Man" and "War Pigs," and the sound of a post-apocalyptic soiree can be heard in the energy of the crowd and the band alike.

Stuff Smith spent the final two years of his life performing in Europe; this previously unreleased Swiss concert from 1965 was finally released some 36 years later. The violinist is accompanied by stride pianist Henri Chaix, young bassist Michel Guillemin, and fellow American expatriate Wallace Bishop (who had resided in Europe since 1950) on drums. Smith is in top form, though the inexperience of the bassist is rather obvious during the awkward introduction to "Perdido"; fortunately, things improve rapidly afterwards. In addition to his swinging fiddle, Smith's hoarse vocals are a riot in his "Late Woman Blues" (also known as "Blues in B Flat"), while he breaks up one of his sidemen with his singing of "On the Sunny Side of the Street." The instrumentals are mostly familiar to Smith's fans, including "Take the 'A' Train" and "How High the Moon," though it is the adventurous and occasionally dissonant take of "Body and Soul," a standard rarely played by the violinist, that takes top honors. The sound is very good for such a vintage recording. Swing fans will consider this long-hidden treasure to be an essential CD.

Stéphane Grappelli was a French jazz violinist who founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France with guitarist Django Reinhardt in 1934. It was one of the first all-string jazz bands. He has been called "the grandfather of jazz violinists" and continued playing concerts around the world well into his 80s.
