Kronos Quartet & Bryce Dessner - Aheym (2013)
    Contemporary Classical, Vocal, Choral | Anti- Records 87296-2 | 2013 | 44:32 | EAC (FLAC, cue, log) | Full Scans | Various File Hosts | 251 MB
Kronos Quartet, Sufjan Stevens (vocals), Brooklyn Youth Chorus, Diane Berkun (director), David Cossin (percussion), Bryce Dessner (guitar), Lisa Kaplan (piano), Dave Nelson (trombone)

Aheym is Dessner’s (b. 1976) debut as a composer, enlisting the California-based Kronos Quartet to lift his compositions off the page rather vividly. One of Aheym’s biggest strengths is how a quartet ... sounds so robustly full and rich. This is a major testament to the quartet’s masterful technique and cohesion as a unit. With Dessner at the helm, Kronos Quartet execute his pieces with majestic excellence, bucket-loads of character, and a precision that’s almost deadly.

    Black Metal

2014 release from multi-instrumentalist Andrew Markuszewski (AKA Aamonael), one of the founding members of the popular and notorious Nachtmystium and current member of blackened Sludge Metal abomination Lord Mantis. Avichi is his solo outlet to show that he is one of the premier visionaries in today's Black Metal scene. The album is a virulent yet enlightening expression of sophisticated Black Metal and the artist's most accomplished work to date. Needless to say, it is an essential release for fans of cult entities such as Leviathan, Negative Plane, Lurker Of Chalice, Deathspell Omega, Katharsis and early Nachtmystium.

Whilst ATB is something of a trance legend, having released 8 studio albums over his extensive career, upcoming album Contact will be his first in 3 years, which is a pretty exciting prospect for fans. "Sometimes I wish I could be a little bit nearer to the people because it makes the interaction much more intense. Maybe that’s why I called my new album ‘Contact’ because I’m thinking about this very often. For me as an artist it is very important to be in contact with the people who listen to my music, both on the album and on stage."

This is a great album for Zimbabwe, Africa. Mokoomba are a young group with an amazing energy, feel and rhythms. I also loved the fact that the booklet is available on their website so the songs have a translation and it's interesting to see what they are singing about. The arrangements are original, new and traditional at the same time and the vocals impressive. I would recommend this album to any African music lover!

    Hard Rock | Label : Steamhammer/SPV

One of the most unusual and charismatic rock acts have announced the release of the latest studio album for January 2014. "Up the Dosage" picks up seamlessly where their 2009 release "From Hell To Texas" left off. And what is more: their five-year hiatus seems to have done frontman Blaine Cartwright (vocals, guitar) and Ruyter Suys (guitars) good - all 13 new songs sound like they were catapulted into to the public from a fountain of youth, rocking in typical Pussy style. Up the Dosage features the first recordings from new bassist Bonnie Buitrago who took over the bass player duties from Karen Cuda.

Verdoes elects to go for straightforward prose instead of any sort of abstraction. It’s elegant in some cases (like in the bitterness of “Two Shadows”), but some of the reflections come off far too boyish, unintentionally interfering with the narrator’s deeper desire for intimacy. Exhibit A: “Keep saying that it’s nothing, but it’s something to me/ You know I didn’t have anybody else,” from “Telling the Truth”, feels more like a scribbled seventh grader note than dark desperation, especially with the slight whine with which Verdoes sings the lines.

The first Pink Floyd show ever recorded, one of the two featuring Syd Barrett. This RoIO is of very important signification and features two very songs (Stoned Again, aka Stoned Alone, aka Stone rust) and Rush in A Million, as well as their rejected third single Scream Thy Last Scream. The recording has been heavily remastered because of the poor source, and though the lyrics are barily audible, Syd's guitar is very clear and omnipresent.

TD's 1987 studio album for Jive Electro, "Tyger", was surprising, as once again it featured vocals, this time sung by guest artist Jocelyn Bernadette Smith from New York who joined composers Edgar Froese, Chris Franke and Paul Haslinger in Vienna and Berlin in February 1987 to transform a series of poems by the English mystic and painter William Blake (1757 - 1827) into songs.

In Trauma, Martin sings entirely in English. The most impressive part is her ability to take very era-specific and unlikely songs and gives it her own spin. This includes Bill Wither’s “Aint My Sunshine”, Nancy Sinatra’s “Summer Wine”, Patrick Watson’s “The Great Escape”. My personal favourite includes a charming cover of The Libertine’s “Music When The Lights Go Out” which I love more than the original. Other artists covered include Amy Winehouse, The Rolling Stones and Bon Iver.

The high-pitched voice of Nana Mouskouri (Crete, 1934) has not only played songs in multiple languages around the world but also has dared to confront major issues of classical themes. This album includes eighteen universal scores of masterss as Schubert, Verdi, Mozart, Albinoni, Donizetti, Bizet and Handel among others, alongside some Spanish authors as Rodrigo, Granados and Tarrega. Nana returns to highlight the elegance, grace and styling of her silky and always balanced voice.

Two years after the critical success of her breakout second album, Indestructible Machine, Lydia Loveless emerges from the trenches of hometown Columbus, OH with the gloves off and brimming with confidence on Somewhere Else. While her previous album was described as hillbilly punk with a honky-tonk heart (Uncut), this one can t be so quickly shoehorned into neat categorical cubbyholes. No, things are different this time around Loveless and her band have collectively dismissed the genre blinders and sonic boundaries that come from playing it from a safe, familiar place.

With his second album Black Action Figure, Stefon Harris still is finding his footing as an innovator, yet he is well on his way to developing his own exciting sense of style. At its core, this is fairly traditionalist hard bop, but there is energy and unpredictability to Harris' playing that makes it feel chancier – and he does push harder at the borders of bop this time around. That added sense of adventure, along with the robust spirit of his supporting band, makes Black Action Figure another winner for Harris.
