Ginastera's choice of concerto instruments was mainly conventional; he wrote one concerto for violin and two each for piano and cello. Yet the fact that he also produced a concerto for harp shouldn't seem uncharacteristic; it can convincingly be considered a close relative of the guitar, and the guitar was essential to the Argentine folk music that so fascinated Ginastera. Ernst Krenek (1900-1991) was a prolific, stylistic chameleon of a composer, who made 'good enemies' on all sides and remains hard to evaluate. This is a valuable collection of three concertos involving the violin, played with impressive assurance by Peter Rosenberg, who is joined by his brother Gabriel (they were a prize-winning duo) in the Double Concerto Op 124 of 1950, perhaps the most attractively accessible of the three. Recently formed, The New Hot Club Of America is an ensemble comprised of some of the top gypsy jazz artists living and performing this music in North America. Modeled on the original instrumentation of the Hot club of France, the New Hot club of America pays particular attention to recapturing the sound, style and spirit of the Hotclub of France by performing music composed and performed by Django Reinhardt & Stephane Grappelli. One of the concepts behind the New Hot club of America is to have an evolving group of featured soloists on rotation. In this way the NHOA can celebrate the many collaborations Django Reinhardt made with other artists in Europe and the USA by inviting singers and instrumental soloists to collaborate in the same way.

This approach can hardly result in a definitive compilation, since the Clash's albums were such cohesive, important works in their own right, and even more erratic LPs like Sandinista! and Combat Rock had their share of fine album tracks…

Khalid Rashid was born in Sulemaniya, Turkistan, but he now lives in Europe. He is recognised as one of the finest and most creative interpreters of Kurdish music. Khalid also sings and plays the flutes nây and blûr, the 'ûd (lute) and various percussion instruments. He has studied all the old traditional styles, not only of Kurdish but also of Persian and Azerbaijani music. …

This is the best recording so far of Partenope. Krisztina Laki is splendid in the lead role as is Helga Muller-Molinari as Rosmira and John York Skinner as Armindo. Rene Jacobs in the counter-tenor role of Arsace does a fine job considering the date of this recording. The orchestra plays with great vitality. This is the recommended recording of this opera.
