Niccolò Castiglioni (1932-1996) was something of an anomaly for a modernist European composer of his generation; he was in no way a traditionalist, but he did not believe that the sun rose and set on the works and theoretical framework of Webern. He was familiar with the newest developments in classical composition, but remained free from allegiance to any particular theoretical school of thought. This puts him somewhat in the same philosophical arena ….Stephen Eddins @ AllMusic
''Sneak Me In'' is seventh album by Lucifer's Friend, an album in which Mike Starrs, formerly of Colosseum II, replaced John Lawton on vocals for a second time. This album and the previous Good Time Warrior (1978) were an attempt at a more commercial, accessible style which met with limited success. Starrs was replaced by the returning Lawton, for 1981's Mean Machine.
The harmonica player displays acrobatic command over an instrument rarely used in jazz groups. His compositions tactfully combine sounds of varying weights into compelling structures. They are complex, yet relaxed. Profound, yet accessible. Siroko is a an intimistic jazz record, and representative of a new direction in Olivier Ker Ourio’s musical development, one focused less on groove and harmonic intricacy and more on melody and respiration. On this record, Olivier is backed by famous Californian guitarist Ralph Towner and double-bassist Heiri Kaenzig.
The Platinum Collection features 18 tracks culled from English new wave and pop/rock proprietor Howard Jones' '80s heydays, including the mega-hits "What Is Love," "Things Can Only Get Better," and "No One Is to Blame." For an anthology this well stocked, there are some surprising omissions, most notably "Life in One Day," "Hide and Seek," and "New Song," making previous overviews like 1993's Best of Howard Jones, 2002's Essentials, and 2005's Ultimate Collection better choices for old and new fans alike.
A wildly successful band in their own right, Toto helped shaped the sound of pop music in the '70s and '80s not just with their own songs, but as studio musicians for Boz Scaggs, Steely Dan, and Michael Jackson. Celebrating their 35th anniversary, the band that served as the backbone for some of the smoothest pop hits of their day take Europe by storm on 35th Anniversary Tour: Live in Poland…
In 1983 the eighty-four year old Lovro Von Matatic appeared for the first and only time at a BBC Promenade Concert with the Philharmonia Orchestra with whom he had been associated since the 1950s. He conducted Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Cecille Ousset and this performance of Bruckner’s Third Symphony.
