The supporting cast may have changed, but The BOSTON HORNS continue to turn out some of the area's most inventive and infectious music. Boston Horns is anchored by tenor saxophonist Henley Douglas Jr., trumpeter Garret Savluk and guitarist Jeff Buckridge. Jim Lampi's Greazy features a host of talented musicians. There's the legendary John Martyn on vocals and the drummer and keyboard player from his band, Arran Amun and Spencer Cozens. They are joined by singer-songwriter Marie Claire Dubaldo and Chris Wells on Brazilian style percussion. This is an album of originals, influenced by the music that has affected Jim over the years; 70s fusion, R&B based jazz standards, Latin music, and low rider bands. The first instrument that Jim learnt to play was the saxophone, and he brings some of those sensibilities to his playing and composing. The Chapman Stick is an amazing instrument with an unusual range of five-and-a-quarter octaves. Its unique sound has intrigued many musicians including John Martyn, with whom Jim plays on a regular basis. John adds vocals to two tracks, bringing his own musical genius to the album.

You won't hear a more perfect performance of this perennially fresh piece than this one. Tempos sound invariably right, ensemble balances are perfect, and every player characterizes his or her part with affection, charm, and taste. Klaus Stoll's double bass lends the necessary extra weight to the general sonority, and the playing of clarinetist Pascal Moraguès is beyond praise. In the central variation movement his dialogue with horn player Guido Corti is so beautiful, so elegant, that it might well bring tears to your eyes.

Swedish metallers SABATON will release their new album, "Heroes", on May 16 via Nuclear Blast Records. The cover artwork for the CD was created by Péter Sallai. There will also be "alternate artwork for some editions," according to the band. "Heroes" was recorded at The Abyss, the recording studio in Pärlby outside Ludvika, Sweden owned and operated by record producer and musician Peter Tägtgren (HYPOCRISY, PAIN).
