In Images from a Closed Ward, composer Michael Hersch (b. 1971) has crafted a tone poem for string quartet inspired by the haunting images of Michael Mazur (1935–2009). By turns harrowing and uneasy, the work gives instrumental voice to something voiceless, finding a genuine grain of human experience in a dark, difficult place.

Bassist Gary Peacock contributed all six originals to this set which also features pianist Keith Jarrett and drummer Jack DeJohnette. These musicians (who are equals) have played together many times through the years and their support of each other and close communication during these advanced improvisations is quite impressive. It's a good example of Peacock's music.

German power metallers RAGE will celebrate their 30th anniversary with the release of a unique collection of songs from their outstanding back catalogue.Due on May 23 via Nuclear Blast, "The Soundchaser Archives" will contain 30 tracks spread out over two CDs, covering everything from previously unreleased material to alternate versions, demo recordings and incomplete ideas.

This early CD (1987) is hard to find, but if you see it at a price you can afford, it's a good value. You get a full hour of Garner's 1954-55 performances on the Mercury label. The 14 tracks present him solo, in a trio and as part of a quartet. His most famous composition, " Misty ", leads it off in his first recording of it, from 1954. The remaining 13 are all standards, presented Erroll's way, which is unusual. He often makes one piano sound like two, often strikes the higher notes firmly and fast. This CD contains more than its share of brilliant music. Tenor man Stan Getz meets up with baritonist Gerry Mulligan, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, the Oscar Peterson Trio, and drummer Louie Bellson for three standards and a lyrical ballad medley, but the well-constructed solos on the blues "Chocolate Sundae" (during which every note seems to fit perfectly) are the most memorable.
