The Minguett Quartet recorded nearly the full cycle of Wolfgang Rihm's string quartets for Collegno, and it's a shame these discs are now out of print. The Minguett Quartet are Ulrich Isfort and Annette Reisinger (violins), Aroa Sorin (viola) and Matthias Diener (cello). On this volume of the cycle, we find three quartets from the 1990s and early millennium, a time when Rihm returned to the effusive expressionism that had first made him famous, after a few years of wispy, piannissimo music imitative of Nono and Lachenmann…….

Many listeners, unfortunately, didn't comprehend free jazz back then and don't comprehend it now; however, those who do understand free jazz will find Simmons to be in top form on this CD. The saxman who is heard on tenor and alto as well as the English horn leads a passionate, highly inspired band that boasts Barbara Donald on trumpet, Richard Davis and Cecil McBee on upright bass, Lonnie Liston Smith on acoustic piano, and Clifford Jarvis on drums. That doesn't sound like a terribly avant-garde lineup, most of those improvisers have played inside more often than they've played outside.

A beautiful, intelligent, elegant, talented album start to finish. Jimmy Amadie's playing is superb, and together with Phil Woods (whose alto sax performance on "Baby Blue" will send you searching for Phil Woods' CDs), bassist Steve Gilmore and drummer Bill Goodwin, you have a quartet of the highest order - all veteran pros.

You may ask, ok, but what is sound like? Well try to imagine an alien Pierre Henry, a robot clon of Conrad Schnitzler, a rebellion of all Morton Subotnik devices or the most mechanical side of 80's industrial and maybe you could be close to a satisfactory definition. With no doubt Jorge Marrero (on all his sides) it's the best that Spain bring to electronic music since Esplendor Geométrico and Francisco López.

Front Page News is the eighth album by rock band Wishbone Ash. It is mostly made up of slower, breezy soft rock ballads with lush vocal harmonies. This style is in marked contrast to the earlier albums, such as Argus, but there were several tracks of this idiom on their previous album, New England. Their following album, No Smoke Without Fire, moves back to a heavier style.

This recording of Mahler's ninth symphony is rarely included in the "critics' choice" lists of Mahler recordings. I have never seen it listed as a reference recording. I don't know why, because I grasp it as an outstanding, perfectly convincing, hair-raising, superbly played and deeply moving recording of Mahler's masterpiece.

The electronic musical project Dirtmusic is probably the only time that the tag “world music” may be used in the 21st century without sounding pretentious or pejorative. Lion City, the group’s second album in 12 months, is a rich, expansive album that is worldly in every sense of the word. Lion City is a rich and fully integrative experience that adapts cultural and musical differences between Mali, Australia, and the United States.

Two Danish forces have joined together for one heck of a track. Giana Factory have enlisted the talents of Trentemøller to produce their highly anticipated second album, Lemon Moon. The first taste of the record is the title track which sees Giana Factory expanding as a band to strange and cool new places. It's clear Trentemøller has left his mark on this song with the pulsating synths and driving beat synonymous with a lot of his solo work. Even the lyrical content, “We will leave very soon, we will fly to the moon”, has an eerily similarity to 'Moan'.

The Philharmonics, the ensemble founded by members of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, fill the Cafe Sperl with some of the most authentically Viennese sounds imaginable – the Strauss waltzes that Schoenberg, Berg and Webern arranged and performed in May 1921 to raise funds for their pioneering “Society for Private Musical Performances”. This is music the players have in their blood, and they maintain the echt atmosphere with Godowsky’s tribute to the city, “Alt-Wien” and a clutch of Kreisler gems, rounding the programme off with a new piece by the ensemble’s leader Tibor Kovac, based on traditional Jewish melodies and Mahler themes, “Yiddische Mame”.

Cream were a 1960s British rock supergroup power trio consisting of bassist/singer Jack Bruce, drummer Ginger Baker, and guitarist/singer Eric Clapton. Their sound was characterised by a hybrid of blues rock, hard rock and psychedelic rock, combining psychedelia-themed lyrics, Eric Clapton's blues guitar playing and vocals, Jack Bruce's voice and prominent bass playing and Ginger Baker's jazz-influenced drumming. The group's third album, Wheels of Fire, was the world's first platinum-selling double album. Cream was widely regarded as being the world's first successful supergroup. In their career, they sold over 15 million albums worldwide. Cream's music included songs based on traditional blues such as "Crossroads" and "Spoonful", and modern blues such as "Born Under a Bad Sign", as well as more eccentric songs such as "Strange Brew", "Tales of Brave Ulysses" and "Toad". ~Wikipedia

It may be a bit reductive to call Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain the Reckoning to Slanted & Enchanted's Murmur – not to mention easy, considering that Pavement recorded a song-long tribute to R.E.M.'s second album during the Crooked Rain sessions – but there's a certain truth in that statement all the same. Slanted & Enchanted is an enigmatic masterpiece, retaining its mystique after countless spins, but Crooked Rain strips away the hiss and fog of S&E, removing some of Pavement's mystery yet retaining their fractured sound and spirit.

Starting out as the bassist and lead vocalist for English hard rockers Trapeze (which evolved from British soulsters the News) in 1969, Glenn Hughes achieved his greatest fame as the bass player of Deep Purple from 1974 until the group split in 1976. Hughes subsequently reconvened Trapeze (with no records resulting) and issued his solo debut, Play Me Out, in 1978. His next effort, recorded with guitarist Pat Thrall under the name Hughes/Thrall, appeared in 1983, and worked in the supergroup Phenomena in 1985.
