    Classical | EAC: FLAC+Cue+Log | 1 Cd, Covers + Booklet | 306 Mb
    Label:BIS - Date:2003

Kalevi Aho’s Third Symphony foreshadows his later works that make ingenious use of various instruments in concertante form. While several of these quasi-concertos already have been issued as part of BIS’s enterprising and valuable complete Aho edition–notably Symphonies Nos. 8 (organ) and 9 (trombone)–this earlier work for orchestra and violin, written in the 1970s and presented in absolutely terrific sound, appears as fresh as if it had been written yesterday…..

Joseph Wölfl is known – after a fashion – as the pianist who played Ludwig van Beethoven to a draw in a famous cutting contest in Vienna in 1795. To far fewer listeners, Wölfl is a composer of negligible merit who died just a little too young and left behind compositions too slight in substance to enter the pantheon of classical music's greats, or even near-greats; this is pretty much the verdict of his Grove's biography, as well. From Russia comes a disc that puts this easy summation to a rigorous test……..

Calgary Jazz singer Glennis Houston grew up listening to jazz and swing as her parents taught ballroom dancing, so she spent many nights listening to the laughter and music emanating from the basement dancing studio. "Winnipeg born Glennis Houston makes her first CD with a title that might well be a reflection of life's difficulties. This may be her first flight, but Glennis takes off well with "Bye Bye Blackbird" showing us a strong confident voice and a fine backing group to match. She sings mainly standards, with a couple co-written. One of these, "The Story's Over", is a strong swinging number, whilst Cole Porter's "You'd Be So Nice To Come Home To" is sung with a provocative sensuality.

One of the biggest-selling jazz albums of all time, not to mention bossa nova's finest moment, Getz/Gilberto trumped Jazz Samba by bringing two of bossa nova's greatest innovators – guitarist/singer João Gilberto and composer/pianist Antonio Carlos Jobim – to New York to record with Stan Getz. The results were magic. Ever since Jazz Samba, the jazz marketplace had been flooded with bossa nova albums, and the overexposure was beginning to make the music seem like a fad. Getz/Gilberto made bossa nova a permanent part of the jazz landscape not just with its unassailable beauty, but with one of the biggest smash hit singles in jazz history – "The Girl From Ipanema," a Jobim classic sung by João's wife, Astrud Gilberto, who had never performed outside of her own home prior to the recording session.

In the 50s Jones performed with Louis Armstrong, with Kebom Calloway, Duke Ellington Orchestra. In 1964, jazz critic Leonard Fezer (Leonard Feather), Salina called one of the best singers of the year ( in the company of Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson). When you listen to CDs released by JVC, always affects the professionalism with which the Japanese approach to working with musical soundtrack. Yet another superb follow up to "The Grobschnitt Story 1" with some real treats for fans of Grobschnitt. This time around Eroc has assembled a collections of alternate mixes (versions which did not make the albums.. .including "Severity Town" from "RockPommels Land"), live tracks from various concerts and loads of older and unreleased songs. Once again a slight portion of the package is devoted to an improvised excursion into "Solar Music" land. This 10 min track is one of the high points in my opinion as Grobschnitt take the listener back into the time of "Solar Music" with a twist… Eroc has also included a great live version of "RockPommels Land" for us to enjoy. Grobschnitt are one of my all-time favourite progressive rock acts and "The Grobschnitt Story 2" is just another solid testimonial as to why these guys were larger than life!!! Essential all the way around. ~Progarchives

L’Orange’s album covers are stark. Obviously the color orange plays a large role, but the contrast in the predominantly black and white vintage images sum up the producer’s style: vintage jazz sounds with a splash of Hip Hop.
Jazz is a genre that often doesn’t utilize words to garner an emotional connection. Similarly, L’Orange in an interview with Everydejavu.com said he started producing because his, “words had ended but [he] still had more to say.”

Soloff's trumpet has wonderful warmth and richness in the mid register and he periodically leaps into the upper stratosphere with squeals and wails. Trombonist Ray Anderson also plays `up there' with abandon, so much so that sometimes it sounds like there are two trumpets. Stand out cuts are Bassist Mark Egan's `True Confessions' which has a gorgeous spaciousness similar in manner to Billy Cobham's `Heather'.
