    Label:MondoMusica - Date:1998

Ettore Gracis achieves a milestone here in the disparate work that is probably Malipiero's finest dramatic effort. What's astonishing is that this is a live recording. The performance standard of the Fenice company is extraordinary which means you turn your attention to the emotion-wrenching drama of the opera where you're not conscious of the technique. Malipiero was highly-original, quirky, eccentric, and inspired all at once. There's been no one ….

Label: Hypnotation, Woodstock Records | Release Year: 2014

On this release I set out to get back to my blues roots and try to make a late 60's early 70's style blues/rock sounding album. In the vein of bands like Savoy Brown, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, John Mayall’s Blues Breakers, The Electric Flag, Pig Pen era Grateful Dead, The Faces, Canned Heat and such. In my own way pay homage to the greats like Elmore James, Reverend Gary Davis, Muddy Waters, BB, Freddie, and Albert King among others. The stuff I cut my teeth on. Not an easy task in this modern digital world. First off you have the digital vs. tape thing. I prefer tape, but these days it’s very expensive to record that way and I didn't have the budget for that. So we forged ahead in the digital world.

    Label: ACT | Rel: 2006

The unlikeliest of bedfellows sometimes make the sweetest music, and Julia Hulsmann's Good Morning Midnight is such a union: soulful, sinewy piano trio jazz, set around ten Dickinson poems plus one song ("Riverman") from the late English singer/songwriter and Twentieth Century romantic, Nick Drake. Imagine the Esbjörn Svensson Trio with Kurt Elling re-setting the works of William Wordsworth and you're approaching the right ballpark. And the secret weapon here is undoubtedly Roger Cicero. His schooled, technically facile voice lends itself well to Dickinson's precise and formal verse, but the soul/gospel undertones behind the college veneer provide the real spark.

    Label: Telarc | Rel: 2003

While Rory Block had been a remarkably consistent artist over the course of 30 years, if all it took was for her to leave Rounder Records to make a record like Last Fair Deal, one has to wonder why she didn't do it ages ago. Block is one of the most restless and in-the-field artists in the history of contemporary blues. She has continually dug deeper into the muck and the mire of not only the blues but her personal life, emotionally, spiritually, amorously, and psychically, to bring out what is integral to the creation not re-creation of blues music. She has suffered, endured, and continued to make music that is not only compelling, but necessary for any accurate understanding of the cultural history of the blues tradition because she is perhaps the living female embodiment of it. Last Fair Deal is a record stripped of artifice or niceties. It is raw, feral, tender, sacred, sinful, lusty, and enlightening. On this recording, Block has assembled a collection of songs written, re-arranged, and restored that showcases the guitar as an extension of her physical and spiritual body.

Dana Gillespie delivers her latest opus of cerebral, spiritual, sensitive, and superlative blues. On this, her first album since 2010's I Rest My Case , Dana is again backed by the creme de la creme of world class musicians - the London Blues Band. Blues can be the hippest of Art forms, especially when performed by the undisputed Empress of Empathy and this CD is a flawless gem.

Colt Ford may have a larger than life hillbilly gangsta public image but he’s actually a sly, passionate, multi-layered writer and he knows what to do in a recording studio, and most importantly, being a former drummer, he knows what do with the beats. He's also a skilled businessman. Ford runs his own label, Average Joe's, and he understands that you can sell as many or more CDs at a mud bog fest as you can at a mall, and if contemporary country radio has been slow to embrace his brand of good-old-boy outlaw hick-hop, Ford has built a huge audience anyway, and it's probably only a matter of time before radio falls in line.

This nearly perfect piano trio set was captured at Smoke Jazz & Supper Club in New York, is his first live recording date. It retains all of the feeling and power of his thrilling live performances but also benefits from Smoke's Steinway B that Cyrus claims is the best piano in the city. 'It s just my ticket. We connect. It s warm and it s sharp at the same time with a lot of earth in it. I like clubs like the Jazz Standard or Smoke, where you can sit down at the piano and get down-home, because that s the kind of audience they attract.' Joining Cyrus are bassist Curtis Lundy and drummer Victor Lewis who both worked with the late John Hicks who was an important mentor and friend to Chestnut.

Herbie Hancock’s Warner Brothers recordings represent the emergence and unfolding of his Mwandishi Band. This genre-crossing group pioneered an expressive use of sound and technologies, a blend of beat and abstraction, Afrocentric sensibilities, and while fronted by a strong leader, a collectivist approach to making music. The band prepared the groundwork for Hancock’s emergence as a proponent of a synergy between jazz and funk. The Warner Bros. Years (1969-1972) brings together his complete catalogue for the label, together with singles and promotional recordings, reissued for the very first time.

Given Christine Schäfer’s wide-ranging repertoire, this mixing of 17th-century English and 20th-century American songs is no surprise. Everything about this recital hangs together without strain – even the gear changes between Purcell and Crumb and the Shakespearean quotes spoken by a boy’s voice, sometimes given a rather sinister quality through electronic treatments.

Elena Kats-Chernin is not only one of the most prolific, but also one of most distinctive voices in Australian music. Cadences, Deviations and Scarlatti was inspired by Domenico Scarlatti’s D minor sonata, K.141, an extremely challenging piece which Kats-Chernin had come to know through performances in Germany by the virtuoso accordion player Elsbeth Moser. ‘It had a sense of infinity, and alongside its tension it gave me a sense of optimism, despite …..

Symphonic/Melodic Death Metal | Label : Fuel Records

Dark Lunacy is an Italian death metal band that crates their sound by mixing together both symphonic and melodic death metal, finding a solid footing between the two sub-genres. The Day of Victory makes for the band’s fifth full-length album release, and while it is a solid listen, it feels as if it could have been better. The band does have a decent bit of talent behind them as all the instrumentation throughout the album was good, I just found myself losing interest at points as the album progressed towards its conclusion. In my opinion it’s the song structure that holds The Day of Victory back from being a great listen.
