Papa Lightfoot & Sammy Myers-The complete 50's recordings of two of the toughest harp players of all times. Papa Lightfoot recorded for the Imperial, Alladin and Savoy labels (among others) and these are some of the most amazing examples of post war, electric harmonica ever recorded. His version of ''When The Saints Go Marching In'' is utterly astounding! Sam Myers has made a name in contemporary blues through his work with Anson Funderburgh. These recordings from the Rex, Ace, and Fire/Fury labels are low down examples of his mastery. Many of these cuts feature Elmore James and his band. There are no dull moments here.

It took Columbia Records two years after signing Paul Revere & the Raiders to release this label-debut LP. In the interim, the group had released a string of singles that were only regional successes in the Northwest. Producer Bob Johnston had taken them into the studio to try to recreate their dynamic live show before an invited audience, but Columbia sat on the results until the group's coming residency on ABC-TV's Where the Action Is prompted this release. The first side of the album displays the Raiders as the raucous club band they were, grinding through R&B dance tunes like "You Can't Sit Down" and "Oo Poo Pah Doo." The second side previews their evolution into more of a pop group in the mid-'60s, although with songs like "Fever," it still retains something of their early R&B flavor.

If any one performer personified the outlaw country movement of the '70s, it was Waylon Jennings. Though he had been a professional musician since the late '50s, it wasn't until the '70s that Waylon, with his imposing baritone and stripped-down, updated honky tonk, became a superstar.

Occasionally, companies will throw consumers a bone and give them a good value. Artisan Home Entertainment has done this with 2001's Lynyrd Skynyrd DVD double feature Freebird: The Movie and Tribute Tour. Both of these videos appear on DVD for the first time, and this low-priced, two-for-one disc exceeding three hours' playing time is a treasure. The DVD is not perfect – the menu is clumsy and you can't access songs individually – but these two videos existing in the digital domain is what's important. 1996's Freebird: The Movie captures the full glory of classic Lynyrd Skynyrd before the 1977 plane crash. Three concerts yielded the terrific live footage, primarily Knebworth Fair in Hertfordshire, England, on August 21, 1976, but also Convention Hall in Asbury Park, NJ, on July 13, 1977, and A Day on the Green at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, CA, on July 4, 1977. The incendiary version of "Free Bird" was filmed in Oakland.

Trumpeter Benny Bailey was teamed with veteran tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse on this hard-blowing quintet date. The fresh material (two songs by Fritz Pauer who arranged the date, a pair from Bailey and one by Pepper Adams) inspires the soloists to play near their peak. With a fine rhythm section (pianist Richard Wyands, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Billy Hart) pushing the horns, this set is even better than expected.

    Label: Hip-O Records | Rel: 1999

Without question, Jeffrey Osborne was one of the most polished and accomplished R&B vocalists of the '80s – but his career also stretched back into the '70s, as he was the vocalist for the long-running funk ensemble L.T.D. This compilation includes those years, making it the most thorough greatest-hits survey of Osborne's career to date. Still, all of the great moments from his solo endeavors are what make this a truly worthwhile purchase. His biggest hits for A&M Records, like "On the Wings of Love" and "You Should Be Mine (The Woo Woo Song)," as well as "She's on the Left" and "(Every Time I Turn Around) Back in Love Again," are all included here. But the truly amazing thing about Osborne's body of work is its timelessness. The production values are still crisp and sound surprisingly up-to-date compared to some of his peers. There are more succinct editions of Osborne's best material available, but nothing this thorough. For fans of R&B and quiet storm, this is an absolutely essential piece to add to a collection.

Cat Stevens' Matthew & Son was among the handful of releases that introduced Decca Records' "offbeat"-oriented (but ultimately largely psychedelic/progressive) Deram label in England. Actually, Stevens' "I Love My Dog" launched the label in fine style by climbing to number 27 on the U.K. charts, and its follow-up, "Matthew & Son," hit number two, resulting in the release of the original album of the same name. The latter was not only a fine account of Stevens' early folk-influenced pop/rock sound, but was also a beautiful, candid audio "snapshot" of one side of Swinging London's musical ambience in late 1966 and early 1967.

Finally after three years, the guys of Emil Bulls release their new studio albumSacrifice To Venus! With a new record company, new sound and a new album the masters of Alternative Metal come back to business – and also to their roots. “Sacrifice to Venus” sounds like the good old times. Imperious, energetic, atmospheric but also melodic and emotional: no matter if “The Bulls” party with their “Pants Down”, which will be the first single, - a song hearing you imagine some guys totally hammered in their rehearsal room. Or if singer Christoph reveals his beautiful voice and praises the feeling of the broken heart syndrome on “Dear Sadness”.

Goblin Market, a melodrama – a spoken narration with musical accompaniment – is a superb example of Aaron Jay Kernis' gift for almost recklessly profligate inventiveness. Christina Rossetti's mysterious, very long 1859 poem "Goblin Market" (it's over 550 lines) is notable for its vividly pictorial, sensual (and sometimes unambiguously sexual) imagery. The story of two little Victorian girls, sisters, and their nearly fatal misadventures with a band of goblins, comes across as …….

Japanese composer Toshio Hosokawa, born in 1955, received most of his training in the West, studying with Isang Yun and Klaus Huber in Germany and at the Darmstadt Institute, and he brings a Japanese aesthetic sensibility to the techniques of modernism. Most of the music on this album is notable for its somber, atmospheric tone, a prevailing sense of virtual stasis, and its delicate, finely calibrated scoring. Three of the four pieces feature ……
