Tom Browne is a fine trumpeter whose style is touched by that of Freddie Hubbard and Miles Davis. However, he has mostly chosen the commercial route for his career, enjoying the presence of both electronic rhythms and rappers while only occasionally playing acoustic jazz. He is always reasonably creative no matter what the setting. This sampler has a dozen selections from previously released albums plus a new remix of "Bluesanova." There are some interesting moments along the way, including a heartfelt version of "In a Sentimental Mood" (with Browne in a trio with pianist Larry Goldings and bassist Ron Carter), a fine rendition of "Freedom Jazz Dance," a jam on "Philly Twist," and a Dianne Reeves vocal on "Someday We'll All Be Free."

Jamie Hailstone of R2 magazine has referred to them as the band no self-respecting British blues festival can afford to be without. During their decade-long career together they have released seven studio albums, building each time on their highly original brand of hard-hitting blues-inspired rock, and based on that self-composed repertoire have developed a dynamic stage show, featuring their all-action front-man Adam Norsworthy and the distinctive blues harmonica of Derek Kingaby. Its perhaps surprising that The Mustangs havent released a live album before, given their profile with audiences around the country, and the wealth of material they perform, so this is a welcome release, recorded at one of their regular appearances at the Swanage Blues Festival, and featuring sixteen of their most popular songs, including some selected cover versions from their act. It readily captures the excitement of their live show, and will undoubtedly be much in demand among their consistent following, and will help to develop their growing reputation yet further.

Retro funk enthusiasts Weekend Sun have teased us with a string of sizzling singles and the like, but it's taken until now for their debut long player, Forever Tomorrow, to drop. It's a colourful affair heavily indebted to the kind of sample-heavy 90s hip-hop that blended 1960s soul, funk and even hip jazz. However, despite the hip-hop influences, this collective of northeast musicians are all about classic songwriting dressed with vintage soul stylings, and this they do very well. Standouts here include the lushly forlorn "Love Remains" and the broken-soul-beat of "Lies".

As solo artist, DJ and co-producer of Aural Float and Saafi Brothers, Gabriel Le Mar is well-known beyond the national borders. His releases on labels such as Spirit Zone, BlueRoom and multiColor are countless. Additionally, he did some legendary remixes, e.g. for Bob Marley and Air Liquide. On Reel Time, opulent stringslayer in early nineties tradition (“Firefly”), percussively enriched progressive House with a pinch of Acid (“Stick Dance”) or orientally inspired Dubfunk (zero db) can be found - a real cornucopia of style-determining factors from Le Mar's broad musical socialisation between Ambienttrance, Downbeat, Chillout, Electro and, of course, lots of Dub…

Algerian singer Rachid Taha grew up in France, where the intermingling of cultures inspired him to combine traditional Arabic music with rock and Algerian rai. The danceable pop rai sound that became popular in the '80s is in full effect on Live. Taha's charisma and frenetic energy are showcased throughout the 11-track CD, as is his penchant for rock star posturing a la Bono. But the jangling Arabic rhythms, explosive guitar solos, and emotional vocals make the album well worth a listen. ~Allmusic

What Svetlanov is to the Miaskovsky Symphonies the Taneyev is to the Quartets. Like that eminent conductor the St Petersburg quartet remains the only one to have enshrined the canon to disc. Admirers of the composer will perhaps remember the pleasantly colourful LP sleeves and will doubtless welcome the appearance of the set on Northern Flowers. Don’t overlook the booklet artwork. This one has a bucolic Beryl Cook-meets-Socialist Paradise feel. Plenty of big pink buttocks and healthy agricultural toil. Not sure what Nicolai Yakovlevich would have made of that. The Twelfth Quartet was composed in 1947 and dedicated to his pupil Kabalevsky……

The fourth volume in Northern Flowers' reissues of the Taneyev Quartet's recordings of the string quartets by Russian composer Nikolay Myaskovsky joins together his Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh works in the genre. All three come from the later years of the Great Patriotic War, but only the Ninth in D minor was entirely conceived and executed then. The Tenth in F major and the Eleventh in E flat major were conceived much earlier: the Tenth is a rewritten version of an unpublished youthful quartet, while much of the Eleventh is purloined from songs and short piano pieces written in the '30s. This means that only the restless and impassioned Ninth Quartet is recognizable as a work by Myaskovsky, while the Tenth and Eleventh seem……

In the years after Elvis Presley but before the Beatles, Cliff Richard was the biggest thing in British rock & roll and in the years after the Beatles, he was never far from the top of the U.K. charts. Arriving in 1958, just a couple of years after skiffle swept across Britain, Richard was the first English singer to approximate the hip-shaking rebellion of American rock & roll with his 1958 debut single "Move It." A smash hit right out of the gate, "Move It" kicked off an astonishing five decades' worth of hits (his last time in the U.K. Top 10 was, as of this writing, in 2008, when "Thank You for a Lifetime" went to three).

Long before Blues Traveller, there was this band called The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, led by the vocal & harmonica talents of Paul Butterfield. Many aspiring blues and rock musicians passed through Butterfield's band throughout the 1960's & 1970's and went on to greater fame, Mike Bloomfield being one of the most famous. Here on this 1978 concert DVD, recorded for the Rockpalast German TV show in Essen at the Grugahalle, Butterfield and his 'non' blues band rip it up on an all too short 45 minute set that incorporates blues and funk into a hard rockin' set of covers and originals.
