Pussycat was a Dutch country and pop music group from the Netherlands, driven by the three Kowalczyk sisters: Toni, Betty and Marianne. Other members of the band were Lou Willé (Toni's ex husband), Theo Wetzels, Theo Coumans and John Theunissen. In 1975 they scored a big European hit with the song "Mississippi". However they had to wait a further year for the single to make the British charts when it climbed to number one in the UK Singles Chart in October 1976. Penned by Werner Theunissen, who had been the sisters' guitar teacher, it is estimated that "Mississippi" sold over five million copies worldwide. It was later followed by "Smile" in 1976, and "Hey Joe" in 1978. Other hits were "If You Ever Come to Amsterdam", "Georgie", "Wet Day in September" and "My Broken Souvenirs". Their career in Europe spanned more than a decade and included some seventeen albums…

Raphael Wallfisch (cello), Esther Ingham (flute), John Turner (recorder), Carl Raven (alto saxophone), Northern Chamber Orchestra, Nicholas Ward (conductor), Manchester Sinfonia, Richard Howarth (conductor)

Sir Malcolm Arnold’s (1921-2006) preference for classical forms is fully explored in this representative but uniquely distinctive programme. Orchestrations of earlier works form the lyrical Concertino for Flute and Strings and a Saxophone Concerto whose bold statements foreshadow the gritty and powerful Symphony for Strings. Arnold’s virtuoso Fantasy for Recorder and String Quartet is a late work, and the Cello Concerto was the composer’s last in this form; a piece which speaks directly from the soul, appearing here in its première recording.

“There are many great soul singers, but few have inspired hip hop from its early beginning to now. Syl Johnson is a unsung pioneer of musical fusion.” Syl Johnson began the ‘60s a blues singer and session guitarist and concluded it having synthesized his own brand of gritty Chicago soul. Their first signee, Syl Johnson set the tone at Twinight Records, writing and producing fifteen 45s during his four year tenure with the label. This double LP neatly bundles each side of each of Johnson’s Twinight 45s, from the heavily-sampled grunts on “Different Strokes,” to the ghetto-conscious “Concrete Reservation.”

The quartet of Adrian Belew (guitar/vocals), Robert Fripp (guitar), Trey Gunn (Warr guitar/fretless Warr guitar), and Pat Mastelotto (drum traps/buttons) is a neo-progressive and practically industrial-sounding force to be reckoned with, emerging from the fraKctionalization of the double-trio version of the group – which also included contributions from Bill Bruford (percussion) and Tony Levin (bass/Chapman stick).

The Groovies lost their record deal with Buddah, lead singer Roy Loney had quit the band leaving Cyril Jordan as uncontested leader, and they had spent a lot of time in Europe, building a significant following in the United Kingdom.

Fans of Accept should enjoy the first solo album from lead singer Udo Dirkschneider, which employs all the crushing power of that band's Teutonic metal sound without the latent pop influences. Udo's unmistakable howl leads the charge on Animal House, while his backing band do an uncanny job of copying Accept's immaculate metal crunch…

The term "rock legend" certainly applies to Ian Gillan. Fronting such bands as Deep Purple and Black Sabbath over the years, he has proved that he has an incredible voice and has been a very influential force in the rock genre. This solo album features both his incredible vocal talents and some fine songwriting. The material varies from hard rock that feels a bit like Deep Purple to more balladic sort of works. In fact, one of the ballads on the disc is an incredibly emotional piece that is one of the best cuts on the CD.

Special guests include Lightnin Malcolm (guitar), Sharde Thomas (drums) and Memphis session singers Shontelle Norman-Beatty and Risse Norman. The result is a stunning representation of Americana roots music.

Sir Roger Norrington is best known for his historically informed performances of Baroque, Classical and Romantic music. On this album he turns his attention - and that of the Zurich Chamber Orchestra - to some of the most popular of Haydn's 104 symphonies. For Parisians prior to the French Revolution, Haydn's symphonies were seen as powerful, innovative works which demonstrated the composer's brilliance and invention. Here, the 30-strong ensemble - tightly drilled by Norrington - clearly demonstrate why they've achieved international importance. Sir Roger brings to these performances the expected solid historical scholarship, to give us a Haydn collection that is dazzling, charming and fascinating.

Regardless of what kind of song he was playing, Roy Ayers was always seductive. While the jazz establishment initially derided his fusion of jazz, funk, and disco, Ayers’ innovations were ratified by hip-hop culture, which adopted him as a hero in the '90s. He was on a creative hot streak for almost 10 years, which makes a 10-track distillation of his work difficult. However, 20th Century Masters offers a concise summation of the man’s designs, which are as fun and entrancing now as when they were released. “Running Away” confirms Ayers’ disco genius; few songs in the genre are as multidimensional or as musical. “We Live in Brooklyn, Baby” is an elegant storm cloud of a song, the most influential of all Ayers’ ghetto messages.
