On a sheer sonic level, the album is enthralling it's easy to get lost in the music, and Lynn sings with a vigor that's startling for a woman of 70 but it's an instant classic because of how that sound is married to set of songs that are among the strongest she's ever had. On her last studio album, she wrote only one song. Here, she's penned all 14 tracks, and there's a sense that these are songs that she needed to get out of her, particularly in a setting as intimate as this. While not all the songs are as explicitly personal as "Miss Being Mrs.," that's for the best, since the variety of styles and types of songs on Van Lear Rose – everything from heartache ballads and country rave-ups to story-songs and gospel illustrate the depth and range of her writing. These are songs that hold their own with her greatest hits, and while it's unlike anything else she's cut, this is surely one of her great albums.

Portraits sees Chris Davids and Liam Ivory exemplify the sort of rare but precious sonic harmony that has made their name so far: equal parts emotive instrumentation and sturdy rhythms, stark soundscapes and rich textures. Featuring longtime collaborator Pedestrian (2nd Drop / Born Electric) as well as vocalists Holly Walker and Jono McCleery, the album takes on a subtle dynamism and natural warmth redolent of Gold Panda and SOHN.

Forgive me, I think I’m suffering from that same old reviewer’s sickness of expecting an older musician to produce work of an identical boilerplate to his former band’s glory days. When I think of Suicide, I think eerie, pulsing synths courtesy of mad scientist Martin Rev, and the droning, monotonous mutterings of his comrade Mr. Alan Vega. And while it’s difficult to listen to Suicide’s self-titled masterpiece of a debut in 2010 and not think of all the bands they’ve clearly influenced (Raveonettes, I’m all but glaring in your direction), it’s still fairly easy to see how the innovation and pure audacity of the music may have shocked folks in 1977. Suicide was a perfect fit for the blossoming ‘downtown’ scene of late seventies New York, and an obvious root system for the enigmatic tree of No Wave to soon blossom.

Following the 1983 release of Powell's third solo album "Octopus", it took another 9 years for him to come up with his fourth and final release prior to his untimely death. This album was recorded between Powell's two stints with Black Sabbath, and following its release he took a band on the road under the name Cozy Powell's Hammer. Once again, he calls upon a who's who of musicians to support him, although the line ups here are somewhat different to those which appeared on his first two albums.

Third is a 1970 double LP by Soft Machine, with each side of the original vinyl consisting of a single, long composition. Its music explores the emerging jazz fusion of the type present on Miles Davis' Bitches Brew, which was released just a few months earlier. Long considered one of the most innovative classics of jazz/rock of any era, Third was the first album to feature saxophonist Elton Dean, who passed away unexpectedly in 2006. In the Q & Mojo Classic Special Edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock (2005), the album came #20 in its list of "40 Cosmic Rock Albums".

The subject of Jordi Savall's latest historical exploration is the life of the 16th-century missionary Francisco Javier, better known outside the Spanish-speaking world as St Francis Xavier. He was one of the founders of the Jesuits, and travelled widely through the east, eventually reaching Japan and the islands of China, where he died. Savall's compilation uses the historical staging posts of Javier's life and times, from his birth in Navarre to the start of his missionary travels as the scaffolding for a typically imaginative and exotic sequence of musics, which begins in the Spain of Ferdinand and Isabella and ends with the traditions of Japan and China. Like its predecessors, which were centred upon Christopher Columbus and Don Quixote, the musical performances by Savall's ensemble Hesperion XXI and his usual lineup of soloists, complemented here by Japanese performers, is packaged lavishly within the covers of a glossily illustrated 264-page book with texts in five languages. The multilingual presentation doesn't make it easy to find one's way around, but the discs themselves are vividly performed, and their variety is beguiling.

Since releasing their self-titled debut album in 1985, the trio has directed the evolution of flamenco as a world-savvy music. In addition to their own albums, which fuse flamenco with salsa, Brazilian, reggae, pop, funk, jazz, and hip-hop influences, Ketama has collaborated on two albums — Songhai and Songhai 2 — with Malian multi-instrumentalist Toumani Diabate.

‘Dornik’ will be released 14th August via PMR Records, and is previewed by lead single ‘Drive’, co-written and produced with Russ Elevado who also mixed the single. ‘Dornik’ features the debut single ’Something About You’, and previously shared tracks ‘Second Thoughts’ and ’On My Mind’. Brimming with choppy bluesy guitars, the crisp and bright ‘Drive’ treads on similar ground as other modern R&B artists, referencing 1980s pop and hedonistic grooves that sound ripe for a summer of love.
