There are moments that you — even when listening to blues — hear music that you do not yet know. In other words, you hear music you did not know existed. What makes it even more special is that then also the music turns out to be a band with four (yes, only four) musicians. The instrumentation is not very special: two guitars, bass, drums. The clue lies in the guitarists: they both play slide. Redundant, would you say, one “normal” guitar and a slide provides more combinations. Not in the case of the American band Delta Moon.

Recorded live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London in Dec 1973, and live at the Uris Theater, New York NY in May 1974. Released in Nov 1974. The original album was a single disc with one side per show. CBS refused to release a double album, or even consider a "bonus" mini-LP (10-inch), so these magnificent performances were edited down to fit on a single LP. They also refused to allow any Hoople tracks to be included, which certainly affected the track selection of the Uris side, which were also presented out of real-time sequence for programming considerations. At over 50 minutes, it was still quite a long LP for 1974. The 30th Anniversary Edition 2 CD set (2004) reissue has a full disc dedicatd to each show.

An enormous collection of classic Santana, The Ultimate Collection is a good introduction to this important artist containing a relatively complete and interesting collection of his '60s and '70s tracks. Fans may not need this, but it makes a good first step into his catalog for those who might be curious.

On this release from Marian McPartland's Halcyon label, the veteran pianist heads a straightahead all-female quintet that also features the excellent guitarist Mary Osborne, altoist Vi Redd, bassist Lynn Milano and drummer Dottie Dodgion. For the live performance they play eight familiar standards including "Now's the Time," "In a Mellotone," "I'll Remember April" and "But Beautiful." This hard-to-find LP is most valuable for its solos by Osborne and Redd who both made too few records through the years.

Here is the great Ernestine Anderson in the full bloom of youth as you may have never heard her before live in front of an appreciative audience. This is the 34-year old Anderson singing with exuberance and spontaneity in the intimate setting of Seattle's legendary jazz club, The Penthouse. Here she swings and shouts, cajoles and caresses her way through a set list of standards and jazz classics as only she could. These recordings are seeing the first light of commercial release. They have never been issued before in any format.
