Stefon Harris & Blackout have created a powerful blend of jazz and R&B with a hip-hop percussion accent on their well-titled CD Evolution. With Harris doubling on vibes and marimba, keyboardist Marc Cary, alto saxophonist Casey Benjamin, and bassist Darryl Hall, plus the driving percussion of Terreon Gully, the quintet's energy is immediately apparent.

Brethren Of The Free Spirit is an acoustic collaboration between guitarist/composer James Blackshaw and lutenist/composer Jozef Van Wissem. Named after a cult of 13th-century Northern European religious heretics (they’re detailed in Greil Marcus’s Lipstick Traces), this duo play with an appropriately zealous intensity. Their first album All things are from Him, through Him and in Him was released on Belgian imprint Audiomer. The second album is released in November 2008 by Important Records. Brethren of the Free Spirit debuted in New York and went on a crusade through the Lowlands, Belgium, Spain, Ireland and London.

Though they were immediately pegged as the runts of the Bay Area thrash metal scene for barely being old enough to drive, Death Angel quickly silenced most critics with their ambitious first album, The Ultra-Violence. Technically on par with many of their older peers, the album still showed a lot of room for growth, however – especially in the songwriting department.

VENOM, the hugely influential U.K. outfit now celebrating a full 30 years since the release of its "Welcome To Hell" debut, will have a brand new studio album released on November 28 via Spinefarm Records/Universal. Titled "Fallen Angels" and featuring 13 fresh recordings produced by mainman/bassist Conrad "Cronos" Lant, this is the follow-up to 2008's "Hell" release, and sees the trio (completed by guitarist Rage and drummer Dante) adopting a style highly redolent of classic early VENOM with modern studio technology employed only to increase the general level of nastiness.The first limited edition pressing of "Fallen Angels" will come with two bonus tracks, "Annunaki Legacy" and "Blackened Blues".

“A Divine Act of War” is a full on power metal assault featuring soaring vocals, blazing guitars, and symphonic keys driven at full throttle by the pounding rhythm section. The album was written by the band as a true celebration of all things metal and as such encompasses many metal styles ranging from the heavy, anthemic fist pounding roar of “Heavy Artillery” to the folk-metal glory of “A Warriors Destiny”, or the dark majesty of the title track. Digitally remastered and expanded two CD edition of the UK band's 1984 album includes a bonus disc of remixes, some of which are previously unreleased. Lament was the band's seventh full album and the fourth from the band's most-recognizable Midge Ure-fronted incarnation. It was also the last album featuring original drummer Warren Cann. The album peaked at #8 on the UK album chart and was certified Gold. The album's sound saw the band continuing to move away from the Synthpop style associated with their previous albums, heading into a more mainstream Pop/Rock direction, similar to contemporaries such Echo and the Bunnymen, Simple Minds and U2, featuring greater use of guitar and 'stadium' reverb. This 1985 Seventh, the first release in Riccardo Chailly's 15 year-old Bruckner symphony cycle, is a wonderful performance, thankfully available again. Chailly takes a majestic view of the work… Decca's remastering for this release adds just a bit more clarity and presence to what was already a dynamic and full-sounding recording. Cal Tjader's Brazilian explorations continue and actually deepen with this release, as he joins forces with a host of progressive young Brazilian musicians, all overseen by producer Airto Moreira. By now, Tjader had figured out how to fit into the blend, doing so by losing himself in the complex mix of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, American funk and 1970s-era electronics, integrating his own identity for the sake of the ensemble. Indeed, Tjader actually appears on marimba on tracks like Joao Donato's "Amazonas" and his collaboration with Hermeto Pascoal, "Mindoro," his playing taking on a more brittle edge as a result.

When Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis and Johnny Griffin joined forces and formed a two-tenor front line, bop enthusiasts could safely assume that the sparks were going to fly. Davis and Griffin, after all, were one of hard bop's exciting tenor teams – their saxophone battles were as legendary as the encounters of Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt, Dexter Gordon and Wardell Gray, or Phil Woods and Gene Quill (who, unlike the other teams mentioned here, were a two-alto pair). Battle Stations, like other Davis/Griffin encounters, points to the fact that the two tenormen never had a problem finding common ground.
