WITH A storming new stomp in their boots and a renewed, lithe swagger to their legendary sound, Saxon will release “Sacrifice”, in March 2013 through UDR. Taking a sharper, re-invigorated approach to the production, on this, their 20th album, Saxon have produced 10 of their strongest, heaviest and most inspired songs for many-a-year, and a more than worthy successor to their last album “A Call To Arms”. “Less tricks, more power!” roars frontman and founding father Biff Byford, “my brief to the band was to be raw, be real and not be afraid to look back at the old classic material for inspiration.”

Venezuelan symphonic metal act Nota Profana, featuring Ex-Haggard/Ex-Equilibrium vocalist Gaby Koss, will self-release the band’s sophomore effort “The Devil’s Playground” on February 16, 2013. Nota Profana was founded in 2005 as a Haggard cover band and in 2008 released its debut original album “Violent Whispers.”

There are some that will scoff at the very idea of a comprehensive, three-disc box set overview of Adam Ant's career, dismissing him as nothing more than a new wave fad. Let 'em laugh, since Antbox proves that he, along with trusty guitarist sidekick Marco Pirroni, was a post-punk heavyweight, adept at creating claustrophobic dark angular tunes and giddy glam revivals with equal vigor…

It's hard to believe that after more than two decades together playing in all sorts of sonic configurations, Medeski, Martin & Wood haven't released an acoustic trio album since 2000's Tonic. Free Magic remedies that. The set was recorded during their 2007 acoustic tour. There are five tunes in this hour-plus set; four are originals. Chris Wood's "Doppler" (a studio version appeared on 20 [available on iTunes]) commences as a rhythmic improv with Billy Martin playing balafon (an African cousin to the xylophone) with John Medeski on a toy piano and a melodica, and Wood bowing his upright. The pace gradually increases before a rhythmically repetitive motif introduces itself. After vamping on for a minute, the track shifts gears and becomes a jumping, funky, soul-jazz piano trio tune that suggests, in equal parts, the Impulse-era trios of Ahmad Jamal, and Les McCann's and Ramsey Lewis' mid-'60s groove fests.

The progressive aspirations were put aside for Wishbone Four, the group's most solid-rocking album, though the folk-based element is still there, more solid than ever. "Ballad of the Beacon" is a genuinely beautiful song, and might have come from any number of electric folk-rock bands – the fact that it came from Wishbone Ash indicates just how serious they were in wanting to explore some of these sounds. Their most mature and successful album.

A spin off project of popular AOR band Last Autumn’s Dream, Heartbreak Radio aim to please AOR and Westcoast fans everywhere by bringing in a little early 80’s L.A. popcraft to the typical FM rock approach, complete with sax and groovy ballads straight out of a Doobie Brothers jam session. The jazziness and progressive overtones associated with Ambrosia and Toto are toned down in favor of radio friendliness, but that’s the key appeal to this genre among aficionados anyway….and some of this stuff is pretty damn catchy, truth be told…
