Rosalia De Souza confirms her place in a long line of Brazilian contemporary artists as she carries on a rich tradition of great songwriting. de Souza's delightful voice charms when singing alongside superstar Marcos Valle on "Que Bandeira" and persuasively interprets "Vivo Sonhando" by the Maestro Antonio Carlos Jobim. Between these two internationally known columns of Brazilian music, she moves gently along with either Bossa or Samba, thanks to Roberto Menescal's solid hand ( and composer of the album's title song) Menescal's guidance pushes De Souza to interpret a more evocative and spiritual song such as "Jogo De Roda" by 'mestre' Edu Lobo, whose tones are ancestral.

Johnny Griffin was born in Chicago April 24, 1928. He played clarinet and alto saxophone but changed to tenor when he got his first professional job with Lionel Hampton when he was 17 years old. He later played with Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers and replaced John Coltrane in 1958 in Thelonious Monk's Quartet. From 1960 - 1962 he co-lead the famous and much recorded "Tough Tenors" quintet with Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. In 1963 he moved to Europe where he has been living ever since. He is now living in France - south of Paris.

This is a live recording of a concert given by Ravi Shankar in 1993 and released to commemorate his 75th birthday a year and a half later. He is accompanied on tabla by virtuoso Zakir Hussain and on sarod by his own student (and virtuoso in his own right), Partha Sarathy. He begins the evening with his own interpretation of a rare raga, that of jait. He chose the version played here after researching a few possible forms of the raga that have appeared over the centuries (families, essentially, of ragas). After exploring the grounds of jait thoroughly, he moves on to kirwani, a raga adapted by Shankar from the Carnatic system. He draws out a mood of romanticism, eroticism, and happiness mainly, his preferred method of dealing with some of the madhur ragas.
