    Genre: Jazz, Post Bop

The first officially released live album by Medeski, Martin & Wood, as well as their first acoustic recording since their debut, Tonic captures the best of several 1999 performances at the small New York City club of the same name. The group's playing is a nice mix of outside, bop, and funky grooves, but the difference here is that Medeski is unable to rely on the electric organ to produce effects. That often means his lines are busier and more staccato than usual, and, especially on "Invocation" and "Thaw," he takes spirited flights into the avant-garde with chaotic yet controlled flurries of notes. The group's rhythmic interplay, too, becomes more important in this context, with the grooves shifting around often enough to give the musicians more to react to.

This anthology brings together, for the first time, all of the singles Sam Cooke released between his departure from the Soul Stirrers in 1956 and his rise to international fame as a popular music artist in 1962. Varied in their themes, from the bitterest rhythm n blues track to the schmaltziest ballad, these sixty-three tracks (on thirty-five singles) also reflect the influence on Cooke of gospel music, rock n roll, jazz, blues, pop and country, and paint a vivid portrait of the first six years of his career, two years before his tragic death in 1964. The 72-page booklet contains info on every song, with label artwork.

This album is pretty special and even though at the time of release, the melodic rock scene was pretty minimalist in terms of opportunities, a number of similar bands were kicking around, and managing to finally getting their demos released, after what seemed a lifetime. Bands that fall in these categories, which seem to have come from the similar stable as Mara are the likes of Stone Soup, Sunshine Jive, Stun Leer, Tour De Force and Shotgun Symphony.

'Rocks & Honey' is the first new studio album from Bonnie Tyler since the very addictive but badly produced 'Wings' in 2005. Fans have waited so long for a new release and this one (her sixteenth album) does not disappoint. It's modern and powerful, Bonnie hasn't had a hit in the UK for decades and this may be the one that might finally correct that.

The final album for the Surfers' legendary run on Touch and Go got a reception probably not even the band figured on – lead reviews in major music magazines, increasingly higher profiles, and more. As it is, though, Hairway is actually a touch lazy in comparison to the previous releases, sometimes sounding almost all too normal. When it connects, though, Steven works wonders, whether continuing in the punk/psychedelic fusion vein of the past or exploring a gentler, tuneful side…

After adapting works from the French classical repertoire with Lionel Belmondo and putting together bespoke scores for artists such as saxophone player David Liebman, Brazilian popular singer Milton Nascimento and violinist Jean-Luc Ponty, French composer, arranger and flautist Christophe Dal Sasso sets off on a new musical adventure of his own. Based on a performance that brings together on the same stage a writer/actor, a classical pianist and an orchestra led by jazzmen, Ressac can be viewed as the culmination of a personal journey.

Zorn's virtuosic string music is legendary and this CD focuses on his compositions for violin. Two major new works for solo violin - Passage (based on the legendary B-A-C-H motif) and Ceremonial Magic (which appeared on Rimbaud in a duo realization with drums but here is presented as a virtuoso solo piece); and an enigmatic suite of 12 miniatures for 2 violins entitled Apophthegms. Featuring three incredible young virtuosos: Pauline Kim, David Fulmer and Chris Otto, Lemma is a CD of wildly imaginative string music performed with passion and fiery intensity.

Alternating hard-driving blues-rockers with country-folk numbers, Humble Pie neatly showcases the two sides of this band's personality on their first release for a major American label and third album overall. All of the elements are in place for the sound that would reach its studio peak with the next release, Rock On, and culminate with the classic Live at the Fillmore album. "Earth and Water Song" provides a blueprint for the acoustic guitar-based sound Peter Frampton would ride to multi-platinum success as a solo artist later in the decade. "One Eyed Trouser-Snake Rumba" and "Red Light Mama, Red Hot!" show the hard-rocking direction in which Steve Marriott would move the band after Frampton's departure the following year.

For a mild-mannered man whose music was always easy on the ear, Nat King Cole managed to be a figure of considerable controversy during his 30 years as a professional musician. From the late '40s to the mid-'60s, he was a massively successful pop singer who ranked with such contemporaries as Frank Sinatra, Perry Como, and Dean Martin. He shared with those peers a career that encompassed hit records, international touring, radio and television shows, and appearances in films. But unlike them, he had not emerged from a background as a band singer in the swing era. Instead, he had spent a decade as a celebrated jazz pianist, leading his own small group. Oddly, that was one source of controversy. For some reason, there seem to be more jazz critics than fans of traditional pop among music journalists, and Cole's transition from jazz to pop during a period when jazz itself was becoming less popular was seen by them as a betrayal.
