    Alt. Rock | MP3 CBR 320 kbps | 65:32 min | 149 MB
    Label: Capitol Records | Tracks: 18 | Rls.date: 2013-07-16

2013 release, the third album from the Alt-Rock trio. Connect is the perfect title for Sick Puppies' most ambitious album. The trio is all about connection–with their fans, each other, their own psyches. Each of the dozen songs on Connect – from intense, epic rockers to mellower yet lyrically anguished ballads - is introspective yet also universal. From the first single, 'There's No Going Back' to the band's most political song, the ironic 'Gunfight,' Connect will exhilarate old fans and captivate new ones.

An acoustic guitarist with a very pretty tone, Earl Klugh does not consider himself a jazz player and thinks of Chet Atkins as being his most important influence. Klugh played on a Yusef Lateef album when he was 15 and gained recognition in 1971 for his contributions to George Benson's White Rabbit record. He played regularly with Benson in 1973, was a member of Return to Forever briefly in 1974, and then in the mid-'70s, began recording as a leader. After a couple well-received solo albums on different Capitol imprints including Blue Note, Klugh hit pay dirt with 1979's One on One, a Grammy-winning collaboration with pianist Bob James.

The band has a slightly mellower sound than most in the neo prog genre but well played out. Most of the songs are fronted by Martin Read with Tony Müller backing him up, similar to the way Gabriel / Collins did their melodies. On a few songs they feature female vocalist, Jo Michaels. She has a very pleasant voice… very complimentary to Martin's, showing a more lounge like atmosphere. There is a slight cantebury sound fused with the neo element on "This is Where We Came In".

Really great stuff from bassist Matt Ulery – a player with an imagination as rich as his sound, and an artist who's really becoming a force on the scene here in Chicago! Matt works here in that mix of arrangements and freedom used by some of his contemporaries on the left side of the scene – but he's also got a wider vision, too – one that has the longer pieces stretching out with a compositional vision that goes way beyond just small combo jazz – a really wonderful sense of tones, timings, and layers – served up by a quintet that includes Geoff Bradfield on bass clarinet, Marquis Hill on trumpet, Rob Clearfield on piano and accordion, and Jon Dellemyer on drums.

Although written for the configuration of two violins and continuo, Dietrich Buxtehude's Seven Sonatas, Op. 1, are not trio sonatas in the usual sense. They refer back to the older type of Italian ensemble sonata, with contrasting short sections following in rapid succession rather than the three- or four-movement sonata or dance suite types. Buxtehude came at the end of this tradition, which by 1694, when these sonatas were first published, was beginning to give way to newer Italian types in points further south. He treated the form in the free, rather fantastic style that was his trademark, emphasizing sudden shifts and using the full range of formal devices available to him; the music may, for example, break into an unexpected fugue.

New Orleans bluesman Bryan Lee has packed almost every venue he’s played in. While many artists never break out of their hometowns, Bryan is a great example of one who has, and his reputation stretches from his native USA up to Canada and over to France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and other countries. Therefore it’s fitting that Bryan Lee’s tenth Justin Time recording is a live one, recorded in one of the cities that has embraced him as one of its own – Montreal……
