William Schuman juggled many careers in his full and productive life: teacher, administrator, conductor and composer of ten symphonies as well as a significant representation of music in many genres. His two-movement Symphony No. 3, dating from 1941, derives its organization from Baroque era models. Known as Symphony No. 5, though published without a number, the Symphony for Strings is remarkable for its contrapuntal mastery and irresistible rhythmic élan. Judith (1949) was based on the ancient Hebrew tale of the Jewish widow who saved her people by seducing and beheading the despotic general Holofernes. The syncopated score conveys the anxiety and determination of Judith’s heroism.

Kaempert was always devoted to pleasant music (easy listening), catchy and danceable and composed songs that have been milestones in world music and have stood the test of time. His music is easily recognizable by its unique sound in which, together with the instrumental peculiarities uses a choir singing not texts but sustained vocalizations as a section of the orchestra.

Album recorded in September 1958 at a jazz club in San Francisco, the Blackhawk, where used to act Tjader with various musical groups after the dissolution of his previous 'Modern Mambo Quintet'. For this occasion Cal formed another quintet being accompanied by four musicians who were definitely headlining their specialties: the Cuban Mongo Santamaria (come to the U.S. 10 years ago and had worked with Perez Prado and Tito Puente), with congas and bongos; the New Yorker born in the 'Spanish Harlem' Willie Bobo with drummer and toms especially; bassist Al McKibbon, who had worked with Dizzy Gillespie in bop jazz and became a devotee of Latin jazz, and Californian pianist Vince Guaraldi, who had made his first recording in 1953 with Cal Tjader and had joined him in 1956.

Volume Two is an LP by The Soft Machine, first released in 1969. A jazz influence is introduced to the humour, dadaism, and psychedelia of The Soft Machine (1968). The album was inspired by Frank Zappa's Absolutely Free and consists of two long compositions with "As Long as He Lies Perfectly Still" and "Dedicated to You" serving as interludes. Acting on a recommendation from Zappa, the band split the main tracks into smaller pieces to increase the band's income from the album.
