Although I'm less aquainted with the Francis recording of No. 5, and have yet to hear Kahler, I can say that this interpretation won me over after one listening. If you have some familiarity with and appreciation of Petterson's sound world, then I think you'll have the same experience too. The viola concerto is a work in the ripe and "soulful" manner of late Pettersson, although more accessible than works like ……….

These three pianists popularized the rhythmically rambunctious style of piano-playing known as boogie woogie, and with more than 25 tracks between them, this import offers a great overview. Ammons and Johnson duet on most of the tracks (Walkin' the Boogie, Sixth Avenue Express, etc.), but all three take solo turns, as well as joining together for a poundin' Jumpin' Blues. Some of these pianists' finest tracks, from Carnegie Hall concerts & rare MacGregor transcription discs, remastered from original discs & acetates.

Another collection of inspired pop pastiche and four-track dementia, 1991's The Pod is nearly as long as GodWeenSatan: The Oneness but even weirder and more deranged, due in large part to the band's Scotchguard habit and the severe cases of mononucleosis Gene and Dean Ween contracted while recording the album. As a result, The Pod is dark and murky, with a slightly distant, fuzzy feel. On some songs, such as the cryptic, prog-inspired "Right to the Ways and the Rules of the World," the psych-tinged "Dr. Rock," and the mystic hard rock of "Captain Fantasy," this sound works well, but on others – like the opening track "Strap on That Jammypac" – it just doesn't fit. Ween flexes their stylistic chops a bit on "Sorry Charlie"'s country-rock, "Sketches of Winkle"'s crazed speed metal, "Oh My Dear"'s cute four-track, and "Pork Roll Egg and Cheese"'s Beatlesque psych-pop, but the majority of The Pod, for better or worse, focuses on sludgy weirdness like "Molly," "Awesome Sound," "Laura," and "Can U Taste the Waste?"

Brian Culbertson was a 20-year-old student at DePaul University recording demos in his bedroom "studio" in a crowded apartment that he shared with three roommates above a costume shop on a busy Chicago street. Those demos not only landed the then trombone player in DePaul's jazz ensemble a record deal, but they were released a year later - February 1994 - as part of his debut album, Long Night Out, on which Culbertson played most of the instruments himself.

There have been a number of very fine performances on CD and DVD of of this marvellous timeless work - arguably the greatest masterpiece in the history of classical ballet - but a really good Blu ray disc is surely the visual holy grail! In my view this is by far the best overall presentation of Swan Lake to date. The playing and sound are magical under Gergiev's assured hand and the dancing is superb. It largely uses the traditional Petipa / Ivanov choreography. None of the sexual mannerisms that made Nureyev's dancing and choreography so distinctive, and the casting, costumes and sets are wonderfully conceived. No video performances include all the music Tchaikovsky wrote but this performance at 129 minutes seems quite complete…
