Henri Dutilleux's small but important output demonstrates a remarkable originality of form and technique. Completed in 1985, Dutilleux's violin concerto L'arbre des songes ("The Tree of Dreams") is the culmination of his experiments in unifying large-scale works. The process of unification is present on two interrelated levels: form and thematic development. In his notes to this composition, Dutilleux explains that the convention of dividing a work into movements separated by pauses ……..

This set of six adventurous compositions by bassist Mark Dresser has some otherworldly sounds, some free improvising and plenty of spacey stretches. The latter is due to the flexible and chancetaking singing of Theo Bleckmann, who often functions as part of the ensembles and sticks to wordless improvising. The group also includes trumpeter Dave Douglas (who sometimes sounds traditional and in other spots is as adventurous as Bleckmann, pianist Denman Maroney and drummer Phil Haynes. The music is stimulating but sometimes disturbing, easier to respect than to love.

Joined by several important guests, Cyrus Chestnut proves once again that he is among the brightest, post-bop players of his generation. For this effort, his trio includes legends Ron Carter on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. Joining them are all-stars Lewis Nash (drums on two tracks), James Carter (alto on three tracks), Joe Lovano (tenor sax on two tracks), and two significant appearances by vocalist Anita Baker. This album is very good as well as very solid, with no tracks that clearly stand above the rest. Nash and Baker appear together on the album's only two standards: the slow, sexy "Summertime" and the bright, scat-filled "My Favorite Things." Carter's virtuoso brilliance dominates "Miss Thing" and "The Journey."

Apparently somebody took the criticisms of Buddy Guy's late-'90s Silvertone recordings to heart. They were alternately criticized for being too similar to Damn Right I Got the Blues or, as 1998's Heavy Love, too blatant in its bid for a crossover rock audience. So, after a bit of a break, Guy returned in 2001 with Sweet Tea, an utter anomaly in his catalog. Recorded at the studio of the same name in deep Mississippi, this is a bold attempt to make a raw, pure blues album – little reliance on familiar covers or bands, no crossover material, lots of extended jamming and spare production. That's not to say that it's without its gimmicks.

Lo-fi indie rock is alive and well in 2006, as evidenced by the arrival of the sophomore effort by Pink Mountaintops, Axis of Evol. Stephen McBean returns once more with a set of tracks that sound akin to an amalgamation of John Frusciante's early solo work and the great Skip Spence. McBean certainly has a thing for psychedelic sounds – it's hard not to listen to "Slaves" and not feel like you're about to start hallucinating yourself, while "Cold Criminals" brings to mind the Velvet Underground. But it's not a retro sound that Pink Mountaintops specialize in entirely, as evidenced by the electro beats on "Lord Let Us Shine," and the Sonic Youth-like guitar strumming on "New Drug Queens."

Belinda Carlisle pursued a solo career after leaving the Go-Go's in 1984. As her solo career progressed, Carlisle removed any of the rough edges remaining in her style, transforming from a new wave rocker to a polished adult contemporary pop singer. The change was evident on her first album, 1986's Belinda. Featuring the number three hit single "Mad About You," the record went gold and established her as a viable hitmaker.

This two-disc package from Emmanuel Pahud explores the music performed at the court of King Frederick the Great of Prussia. Frederick was an accomplished amateur flutist, and, thus, cultivated music for his instrument from the best composers of his day. This included Johann Sebastian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, and Johann Joachim Quantz. Frederick himself and his sister Anna Amalia also composed works featuring the flute. Pahud chose selections by each of these composers, filling the first disc with concertos and the second with chamber pieces and solos. These pieces span the period between the Baroque and Classical eras, but in general even Frederick's and C.P.E. Bach's sonatas have more in common with the former than the latter. They still employ the basso continuo accompaniment, however, all of it is very charming and agreeable, as much of the music of that era is.]

Arriving during the tail end of teen pop's heyday, he crafted pop music for a more discerning audience, spiking his songcraft with jazz chords and literate turns of phrase.

An auspicious major label debut for a young saxophonist, Divine Travels eschews flamboyance for a deferential, mostly unpretentious bluesy free jazz recording. Lewis, a thirty-something tenor saxophone phenom chose to record here in trio without the safety net of a pianist or accompanying horn.
