This father-and-son team has been a reliable part of the Chicago blues scene for decades on end. Eddie Shaw first gained fame as Howlin’ Wolf’s sax player before he started fronting his own band, Eddie Shaw & the Wolf Gang. Vaan Shaw has justifiably gained a rep as a hotshot guitar player. This collaboration is an entirely acoustic affair, which explains the title. Naked features only Vaan’s guitar and Eddie’s sax and harmonica, minus any electric embellishments.

In which Mac "Dr. John" Rebbenack puts the lie to the notion that duet albums are just artless, opportunistic photo-ops. For one thing, there's a theme at work here: Dr. John's New Orleans musical roots. For another, most of the guests, appropriately are New Orleans-born musicians–Eddie Bo, Cyril Neville, Dave Bartholomew, Randy Newman (he may love L.A., but he wasn't born there). And despite the considerable star power, there's no overt stab at commerciality here; most of the tracks are full of the murky, moody, swamp atmosphere familiar from Rebennack's spooky early albums.

During November 12-14, 1986, pianist Oscar Peterson recorded three albums worth of material for Norman Granz's Pablo label. This particular CD features the great pianist with his quartet (bassist Dave Young, drummer Martin Drew and guest guitarist Joe Pass) along with trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison and altoist Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. The strictly instrumental set has many fine solos on appealing tunes such as "Stuffy," "Broadway" and the lengthy blues "Slooow Drag." This boppish session gave Vinson a rare chance to really stretch out and he was up for the challenge.
