This Norwegian band returns! Their fourth album is an unholy testament that Norwegian black metal still burns bright.
One of her most overlooked '60s albums, on which she presented some of her jazziest material, despite the title. None of these cuts were significant hits, and none were Aretha originals; she displayed her characteristically eclectic taste in the choice of cover material, handling compositions by Percy Mayfield, Sam Cooke, Smokey Robinson, and, at the most pop-oriented end of her spectrum, John Hartford's "Gentle on My Mind" and Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly." Her vocals are consistently passionate and first-rate, though, as is the musicianship; besides contributions from the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, session players include respected jazzmen Kenny Burrell, Ron Carter, Grady Tate, David Newman, and Joe Zawinul.
By the '90s, Roberta Flack had completely immersed herself in the adult contemporary portion of the radio world, and this 1991 album is concrete proof of that. Largely based on collaborations with fellow adult radio singer Maxi Priest, Set the Night to Music is an odd assortment of standards with a few new compositions thrown in here and there for good measure. No doubt, the album's title track is the standout hit, and one of the biggest commercial successes in Flack's esteemed career. But there are also small surprises here and there on the album, including a stirring rendition of Nat King Cole's "Unforgettable" and the Bell-Creed Philly soul classic "You Make Me Feel Brand New." The production values and choice of instrumentation give this album a slightly dated feel, with a greater emphasis placed on polished synthesizers over the warm tones of a Fender Rhodes or grand piano, but all in all it's a strong album that presents Flack's classy, distinct vocal styling in a palatable fashion.

Restraint is not why Brötzmann was asked to participate in Live at Spruce Street Forum in San Diego. Matched against altoist Marco Eneidi, bassist Lisle Ellis, pianist Cecil Taylor and drummer Jackson Krall, the five untitled improvisations are brain bleeders in the best sense of the term. When a band fully believes in itself and is willing to follow a guy with as bloody a brain as Brötzmann, the results are ecstatic, if not fit for the fainthearted.
